Mysterious disease kills poultry birds in Baramulla

Baramulla, Mar 9: A mysterious disease has killed thousands of poultry birds in this district.

The disease being reported for past several days has made authorities concerned as a large number of poultry birds have died at a single poultry farm in Amargarh area in this district on Sunday.

Though authorities here claim that birds could have died due Ranikhet Disease ( RKD), they did not rule out the possibility of some other disease also.

"We have dispatched a team of officials to Amargarh Sopore to ascertain the cause of death among the poultry birds. We can confirm the cause only after carrying some investigation which includes autopsy of the birds. Symptoms among the affected poultry birds suggest that disease can be Ranikhet," Dr Muhammad Shafi, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Baramulla, said.

Don?t panic by incidences of heavy mortality in poultry

Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Reshi, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), SKUAST-Kashmir said the poultry consumers and the farmers need not panic by the ?sporadic incidences of heavy mortality of poultry birds.?

"Sometimes due to negligence of the farmers in terms of vaccinations and bio-security there can be huge morality of poultry birds. But such mortality should not be confused with bird flu or other deadly diseases," he said.

Dr Reshi said: ?In case of poultry it is not a big deal to arrive at a diagnosis of the disease by undergoing post-mortem of dead birds by a veterinarian. But if other diseases like Ranikhet have to be ruled out then the samples have to be sent to poultry pathology division of SKUAST-Kashmir for sure diagnosis.?

He said the farmers must approach Animal Husbandry department, District KVKs or Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Shuhama for ascertaining the cause and reason for such heavy mortality before approaching media and getting panic.

No evidence of Bird-flu in Kashmir: Experts
?Ranikhet affecting poultry?

Srinagar, Mar 21: In the wake of poultry deaths in some parts of Kashmir, experts have blamed Ranikhet disease for the fatalities while maintaining that there were no traces of Bird-flu in the Valley.

?The disease presently affecting the poultry in Kashmir is Ranikhet, locally known as kokkar koon. It is not bird flu,? Dr Kaiser Makhdoomi, Deputy Director, department of Animal Husbandry, said.

?Ranikhet is the disease of birds, not communicable to humans,? he explained.

Earlier, some poultry fatalities were reported in Baramulla and some other districts. ?Out of 200 farms in the Valley, reports of deaths of poultry in few, have no relevance,? Dr Hafizullah Dar, poultry expert said. Ali Muhammad Magrey, a chicken seller said, ?The sales have dropped significantly, even though the chicken are healthy and the consumers can see it for themselves.?
