Personal Thought: Bird flue scare
[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]In India, though the bird flu started from Maharashtra first, it is now spreading to other states like MP and UP. Yet, not a single case of detection of the deadly virus in humans is reported in India. Though samples of some latest case from Jalgaon were sent to the laboratories, the result is awaited.
In the meanwhile, around the world, fresh cases have been reported from Israel, Egypt, Italy and some other countries. In Egypt, a girl was reported to have died. In Jalgaon, preventive tablet - Tami flu was stated to be distributed amongst those reported to be showing symptoms of the fever.
The more disturbing factor is that in India alone, poultry business is reported to be of more than Rs 30,000 crore turnover. Lakhs of people are eking a livelihood by this. The Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had earlier cautioned of its impact in case this virus scare continues to threaten us.
The other disturbing factor of this scare is that people would start turning to other non-vegetarian items like fish, mutton, beef etc. Naturally when its demand increases, cost would automatically go up. The cost of the mutton has already gone up to Rs 140 a kg. Similarly the prices of different fish varieties have gone up. Needless to say that the people are placed in a highly consumerist environment courtesy globalization/ privatisation. The multinational companies have been given licences in most of the developing countries to establish their business centres. Added to this woe was the television boom through which the MNCs started advertising their products. These days, most of the white colored people, along with their families, prefer to go to restaurants, spreading like mushrooms where products of their choices are easily available.
If this virus starts spreading from man to man, it would definitely create a panic like situation. Then there would not be fear of another world war where nuclear weapons may be used. How much beneficial it would have been for mankind had our scientific wizards diverted their scientific knowledge in developing human welfare oriented medicines and preventive vaccines to contain diseases that often threaten humanity. Instead, they have developed dangerous atomic, nuclear and biological weapons, which, if the current spread of the flu continues, would remain unused. In this terrible situation the only solace is to seek God's help and His guidance in overcoming such crisis.
