Flu reports are few and far between from India this year. If it ain't "swine flu" it doesn't make it into media reports and there are no published state or national surveillance figures. Media reported fatalities are listed below. Worth bearing in mind that a recent study estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3% of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 310 and 450 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests tens, if not hundreds of thousands of H1N1 cases this year. The most recent GISRS surveillance data is not picking up any H1N1 activity - showing 1. that this surveillance is wholly inadequate and 2. that influenza B is more prevalent in India this year (at least wherever the samples were taken). So these H1N1 deaths are just a fraction of total influenza deaths, but it really is all we've got to give some sort of insight into how influenza is affecting one sixth of the world's population. Influenza activity is continuing at low levels in India this year. Media reported H1N1 fatalities are listed below. Worth bearing in mind that a recent study estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3% of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 1,085 and 1,575 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests hundreds of thousands of H1N1 cases this year that are not being picked up on the GISRS surveillance. Of course, H1N1 deaths are just a fraction of total influenza deaths, but it really is all we've got to give some sort of insight into how influenza is affecting one sixth of the world's population. A 25-year-old woman in Kasaragod district of Kerala died of H1N1 on Thursday, taking this year’s toll in Kerala to five. Health officials expressed concern over the spurt in deaths caused by the influenza in Gujarat and Rajasthan over the past few months.
Officials in the Health Ministry fear this may be a year in the H1N1 cycle of greater fatalities. There has been a 21 per cent fatality rate from the disease this year — or one in every five people who contracted the disease have died.
Until June 8, officials said, 89 deaths had been registered while the total number of H1N1 cases was only 414. Gujarat with 31 deaths and Rajasthan with 22 deaths contributed more than 50 per cent of the deaths reported in the country so far. In Rajasthan, one in every two people who got the disease died, while in Gujarat about one in three succumbed.
Karnataka reported 11 deaths, followed by Maharashtra (8), Andhra Pradesh (6), Punjab (6), and Tamil Nadu (2).

Karnataka has since increased to 14 fatalities. With today's two new deaths from Kerala, the national confirmed toll has increased to 94. Of course the real toll is much higher than that. See post above for details. - Ro

Influenza B seems to have been active all year and H1N1 was in the minority. India does not produce Influenza surveillance reports and Indian media remains concerned about H1N1 only. Media reported H1N1 fatalities are listed below. Worth bearing in mind that a recent study estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3% of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 4,680 and 6,870 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests hundreds of thousands of H1N1 cases this year that are not being picked up on the GISRS surveillance. Swine flu death toll 204 till November

As many as 831 confirmed cases of swine flu were reported in the country between January 2014 and November 30, out of which 204 people died.

The maximum number of cases (155) was reported in Gujarat, where 55 people succumbed to the disease followed by Maharashtra with 42 deaths and 112 cases. Karnataka and Punjab reported 294 cases and 33 deaths and 56 cases and 30 deaths respectively.
