Imphal, Aug 14 2009 The Chiefs Association Longpi Area, Nungba sub-division has expressed deep concerned over the dead of five people in the past two weeks due to an unknown disease.

Saying that the villagers are not sure whether it is typhoid, hepatitis or malaria, the chiefs sought immediate attention of the Government so as to avoid further loss of lives.

Unknown disease is reported to have stalked Longpi area under Nungba subdivision in Tamenglong district.

The 'unknown' disease is also said to have claimed five lives in the area during the past few days.

A press statement issued by the secretary of Chiefs' Association Longpi Area (CALA), Th Kailal Gangte today draws the attention of the concerned department to take immediate steps in order to save precious lives of the area.

The statement further provided the names of the five persons claimed by the unknown disease.

They were Thanglalson (5) of Bolphai village, Demjang (40) of Longphailum, Jamkhosat (8) of Longphailum, Lalzangam (13) of Longpi and Sangtangpui (8) of Longpi village.

All the victims had died during the period from July 29 to August 12.Though the disease is yet to be confirmed, the patients had shown symptoms of Typhoid, Hepatitis, and Malaria, the statement said.

This very well might be swine flu I seen in other articles that there are some cases in the area.

It could be. There were also heavy rains in the area, so typhoid and malaria are both possible, as is cholera actually. There's actually no reason to assume it is all the same disease, as it did occur in three different villages.
