PUNE: At a time when the city is trying hard to curb mosquito-borne infections like dengue, the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is spreading rapidly, especially among children. The viral infection, a benign but irritating viral infection, is characterised by painful rashes along with throat infection and fever.
Paediatrician Jayant Navarange said, "I have treated over 60 children in the 4-8 age category in the last 15 days. The infection causes rashes on the sole of the foot, palms and even on tongue or in mouth cavity, which makes eating and swallowing difficult. Unlike rashes in chickenpox, which causes mild itching, HFMD rashes do not cause any itching. If a child is seen not eating and shows loss of appetite and has mouth ulcers then its time to consult a doctor. Importantly, HFMD is contagious," said Navarange...
