Sunstroke toll rises to 12, rain brings respite

BHUBANESWAR: Several parts of Odisha continued to reel under the punishing heat as death toll due to sunstroke rose to 12 with the state government officially confirming deaths of two more people on Monday.
Gopi Dehuri, 35, from Angul district and Danuram Tudu, 55, from Dhenkanal district died of alleged sunstroke on April 27 and April 21, respectively. "Inquiry reports from the concerned collectors confirmed both died due to sunstroke," said an officer.
"Till Monday, we received 46 alleged sunstroke deaths, of which 12 have been confirmed. Eighteen people died due to reasons other than heatstroke. We are waiting for reports on 16 other alleged sunstroke deaths from collectors," the officer said.

KOLKATA: April has been the cruelest month. The long heat wave and relentless scorcher is taking a heavy toll on the elderly and the ailing.
According to city hospitals, the heat is aggravating diseases. Heat-induced deaths have been on the rise, with Kolkata Municipal Corporation recording more than 100 deaths a day over the last fortnight.

The intense heat wave prevailing in the region has started taking its toll as four persons have reportedly died in the last four days.
Sources said all victims were beggars and remained unidentified. While one person was found dead at Sultanwind village, another beggar was found dead near the Majitha bypass road. Yet another body was found near the Chatiwind gate. The police said they would cremate the bodies after a post-mortem if nobody came to claim these.
Heat wave continued unabated in the northern region as temperature in several areas remained above 40 degree Celsius.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The intense summer heat has started taking a toll in the three north coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, with nearly 10 deaths reported in the region in the last one week and three on Saturday in Visakhapatnam district alone.

Sunstroke deaths usually start in May, but this time the reports of the sun strokes have already been registered by the officials in the region because of the rise on temperature levels across the three districts.
