The sweltering heat has started taking its toll as three persons have reportedly died during the past week, if the police records are to be believed. All of the unidentified victims are reportedly destitute, who also appears to be mentally challenged and beggars.

In the recent instance, the Maqboolpura police recovered a body of a man from under the elevated road. The police authorities said he apparently died due to intense heatwave conditions prevailing in the city for the past several days.

Earlier, two persons were found dead in the B-Division police station area on May 13 and May 15. They were also destitute.

Bhubaneswar: With about 78 people getting killed in heat stroke and 285 due to lightning annually in the state, the Odisha government on Tuesday asked the Centre to include these natural phenomena in the list of approved calamities for financing under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

"Kindly consider inclusion of heat wave and lightning in the list of approved calamities for financing the expenditure on the preparedness and response activities relating to the said disasters from SDRF," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said in a letter to Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Twelve persons have reportedly died due to sunstroke in Western Odisha this year. The temperature has been hovering around 46 degree Celsius throwing life out of gear.

Five persons affected by sunstroke were admitted to Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital on Wednesday. They were identified as Ranjan Barik (20) of Mudipada, Sanjib Kumar Mishra (29) of Sakhipada, Madhu Satnami (40) of Daldalipada all in Sambalpur town, Mathura Suna (75) of Khandwal in Maneswar block of the district and Mohammad Azhar (35) of Chandni Chowk in Cuttack who had come to Sambalpur for work.

According to reports, three persons each have died due to sunstroke in Sambalpur and Kalahandi districts while two each have died in Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts till now. While those killed in Sambalpur are Sradhakar Pradhan of Kendutikra village in Rengali block, Purnachandra Bhoi of Karanjula in Maneswar block and Rabi Nikhandia of Barahdungri in Rengali block, the three who died of sunstroke in Kalahandi are Ghanshyam Majhi, Bhaktaram Turia and Pushpalata Pradhani.

Heat wave takes its toll on poultry industry (Andhra Pradesh)

The blazing heat wave conditions followed by temperature crossing 40 plus degrees Celsius since last one month had cast its shadow on the poultry industry with high mortality rate of birds due to the prevailing sweltering heat wave conditions.

Similarly, the egg and chicken production had declined by over 50 per cent during the last one month following the blistering heat wave conditions in the district. The Karimnagar district, which topped in the region in egg production with 17 to 18 lakh eggs per day, had now come down to only 10 lakh eggs per day due to high mortality rate of layer birds.

The Karimnagar district is having around 100 layer poultry farms meant for production of eggs and around 350 broiler farms for chicken production. More than 50 per cent of the poultry farms have been closed due to non-availability of water for installing sprinklers, water coolers etc.

Government veterinary doctor Jayaram said that every day around 50,000 birds are dying in the district.

Even elephants fall sick in severe heat (West Bengal)


An adult female elephant on Friday fell sick near Barjora forest of Bankura district due to the intense heat that has been sweeping the area, sources said.
