January 11, 2010, 01:04 New Delhi, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) The death toll in India due to influenza virus A (H1N1) reached 59 per thousand, according to a report issued today by the authorities of Health Eurasian country.

The report also showed that 27 thousand 712 people have contracted the disease since the first case was detected in Indian Territory in May.

The infections have increased in recent weeks with the arrival of winter, especially in the capital city. Of the cases confirmed by laboratory tests, nine thousand 555 correspond to Delhi, which has killed 85 people so far.

The highest mortality rate of exhibits, however, the southwestern state of Maharashtra, with 284 dead and four thousand and 732 infections.

According to the daily report issued by the Indian Ministry of Health, six people were killed yesterday as he reported 35 new infections, bringing the total cases for the past 10 months amounted to 29 thousand 303.

Five of the deaths occurred yesterday in the state of Gujarat, where so far 268 people have died.

New Delhi: Breaking News! Six more people A H1N1 deaths confirmed yesterday, taking the Swine Flu death toll in India to 1,315. These six deaths had occurred earlier, but were confirmed only on Tuesday.



Two Swine Flu deaths each were reported from Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh too reported one A H1N1 death each.



Maharashtra now accounts for 344 Swine Flu deaths - the highest in the country, followed by Gujarat (170), Rajasthan (186), Karnataka (144), Delhi (95), Andhra Pradesh (52), Punjab (39), Kerala (37), Haryana (37), Madhya Pradesh (25), Uttar Pradesh (19) and Uttarakhand (13).



As many as 41 new cases of Swine Flu were reported across the country yesterdayy, taking the number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 29,378. Maharashtra reported the maxium number of 26new cases.

Six more cases of swine flu deaths have been reported in India, taking the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the country so far to 1321, an official statement said here today.

Three deaths - two in Gujarat and one in Maharashtra - were reported during the day today, the statement said.

Besides, reports of three earlier deaths - two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat - were received from the respective state authorities today, it said.

With these, the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus reported in the country so far has gone up to 29,409, the statement added.

Although the overall intensity of the pandemic influenza has lost some steam in the country, the transmission of the virus persists with sporadic cases occurring almost daily.

With two more people falling prey to the lethal flu Friday, the mortality figure in the country has shot up to 1330 in the short space of six months.

According to official sources, the two fatalities were reported from Maharashtra. While one died yesterday, the second had occurred earlier but was confirmed as H1N1 related casualty to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today by the state.

State-wise death count
It is significant that Maharashtra, the epicenter of the swine flu outbreak in India, remains the state with the highest number of fatalities accounting for 350 lives lost.

Gujarat, where 276 persons succumbed to the virus, follows close. In other states 186 died in Rajasthan, 146 in Karnataka, 95 in Delhi, 52 in Andhra Pradesh, 39 in Punjab, 37 each in Kerala and Haryana.

Emergence of fresh infections across the country
Most of the transmissions in the nation are now between people who have been infected within the country itself.

According to official sources, the circulating virus infected 19 people in different parts of the country. The fresh cases included 12 from Maharashtra, 2 each from Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan, and 1 from Madhya Pradesh.

To date, the total number of positive cases of H1N1 confirmed by both government and private laboratories across the country has risen to 29,452.

New Delhi: As many as 1,501 people have died in India due to swine flu, but the influenza A (H1N1) has now shown signs of abating, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said the H1N1 cases have dropped in the past few weeks.


Fresh swine flu case in Hyderabad


Till May 2, there have been 1,501 laboratory confirmed deaths due to the pandemic, while 30,581 people have been affected with the virus in the country, he said.


India reported its first swine flu death on Aug 4, 2009, while the first case was recorded on May 16, 2009.


'Government took a series of actions to prevent morbidity and mortality due to pandemic influenza A (H1N1) and to mitigate its impact,' the minister said.


Swine flu scare was exaggerated: WHO


Azad said they took various steps to check the spread of the flu in the country by screening passengers at 22 international airports. 'Over one crore passengers were screened,' he added.


He said that the laboratory network in the country was strengthened with 45 laboratories carrying out clinical tests.


Also, India procured 40 million capsules of Oseltamivir, an anti-viral drug, of which 21 million were given to states. The retail sale of the drug was later allowed in some selected outlets.

Rising cases of influenza A (H1N1) in India

July 27, 2010, 4:09 New Delhi, July 27 (PL) The curve of incidence of influenza A (H1N1) continues to rise in India, judging by an official report released today which includes 548 new cases and 38 deaths related to the disease in just one week.
The report by the health authorities covering the days between May 19 and July 25 last, and reports of 19 deaths in Maharashtra, eight in Kerala, five in Andhra Pradesh, two in Delhi and Gujarat, and a per capita West Bengal and Karnataka.

With these figures, the cumulative total of deaths since the virus was detected in the country in May last year reached 692 thousand.

The cases of infected people rose to 34,669. 548 confirmed last week.

The official report says, however, that the cumulative total of cases represents 23.2 percent of the 149,077 people who have been subjected to laboratory tests to detect the virus.

The apparent recovery of the disease is associated by the specialists to the arrival of the rainy season in most of the country.

Serum Institute launches campaign to contain rising H1N1 fatal cases

Vaccine major Serum Institute has commenced a campaign to bring down the number of H1N1 fatal cases in the country. The fatal cases are estimated at 989 out of the 12,401 cases reported in the country between June 2010 and September 26, 2010. In fact, in Karnataka alone 79 deaths were reported in the last 90 days.

The company is now creating a mass awareness drive to help bring down the cases and control the deaths. Karnataka has reported to be the second highest in H1N1 deaths after Maharashtra accounting for 248 deaths from the 4,295 cases. Of the 248 deaths 79 fatal cases came in between June and September 2010.

The National Institute of Virology has confirmed the second wave of the dreaded influenza. The H1N1 activity declined in April and May, but showed a a swift increase from June. The most common cause of death in Swine Flu is respiratory failure. Other causes of death are pneumonia leading to sepsis, high fever resulting in neurological disorders, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and kidney failure.

?This is alarming and we need to contain the spread through a mass campaign,? Dr Prajakt J Barde, assistant medical director, Serum Institute India told Pharmabiz.

The major task is ensure that one does not get the infection as the virus which is airborne and spreading at a fast pace, he added. Last year the country accounted for 1,531 deaths out of 31,943 cases. This takes the total number of deaths from May 2009 to September 2010 to 2,520 out of the 44,350 cases detected. So far Maharashtra has accounted for the highest number of cases at 9,834 and 900 deaths followed by Karnataka with 248 deaths and 4,295 cases.

The only way to prevent the dreaded influenza is through vaccination, stated Dr. Barde. Pharmabiz had reported that India has two H1N1 vaccines. One is the live attenuated influenza Nasova which is India?s first intra-nasal vaccine from Serum Institute launched on July 5,2010. The other is the VaxiFlu ?S single shot intra-muscular vaccine from Zydus Cadila introduced on June 3, 2010.
Serum has also the inactivated injection in two doses of 75 mcg and 10 mcg. The company is awaiting clearance from Drugs Controller General of India for its introduction in to the market. Its Nasova nasal version has achieved 22 lakh doses of inoculation indicating its high acceptability and efficacy, since its launch in July, informed Dr Barde.

According to the World Health Organisation, H1N1 is the most pre-dominant strain in India. The flu is known to be far more fatal than the seasonal influenza. Most H1N1 deaths are in the productive age unlike seasonal flu. The disease is also known to cause higher number of neurological complications in children than the seasonal flu.
