Uttar Pradesh worst hit as rain claims 48 lives in 4 states
As many as 48 people died in rain-related incidents in four states, majority of them in Uttar Pradesh.

As many as 48 people died in rain-related incidents, majority of them in Uttar Pradesh, while incessant rainfall in Bihar, where an alert has been sounded, left the streets of state capital Patna and other areas waterlogged and residences of at least two ministers marooned.

As many as 35 people lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh since Friday, the state government said. While 25 of them died on Saturday, 10 lost their lives on Friday. The meteorological department said heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over eastern UP on Sunday.

In neighbouring Uttarakhand, six pilgrims from Punjab, who were on their way to the Himalayan shrine of Hemkund Sahib, were killed when a huge rock fell on their vehicle in Tehri district following a landslip triggered by heavy rains, officials said.

Also, three deaths each were reported from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, while one person died in Jammu and Kashmir.

PUNE: The police said on Friday that the death toll in floods and rain-related mishaps in Pune district stood at 21, with five persons missing.

Heavy rains lashed Pune city and the district on Wednesday and Thursday, leading to sudden flooding of nullahs, rivers and incidents of a wall collapse.

Pune police officials said 15 persons died in rain or flood-related incidents in the city, while four were missing.

More than 100 dead in fresh India flood chaos

More than 100 people have died due to flooding caused by heavy rains in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, officials have said.

Dramatic visuals of the impact of flood water on urban life have been coming out of the affected areas.

Railway traffic, vehicular movement, healthcare services, schools and power supply have been disrupted in both states, officials said.

An Uttar Pradesh government report said 93 people have died since Thursday.


The death toll in Bihar is 29, according to the state disaster management authority. The impact on its main city, Patna, has been grabbing headlines.

Torrential late monsoon rains have killed nearly 140 people in the northern parts of India, officials said on Tuesday as hospitals and schools remain inundated with dirty rainwater.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the current monsoon has been the heaviest since 1994, classifying it as "above normal", with this year's season being longer than usual.

Over the past four days, 111 people have died in Uttar Pradesh state and another 28 lost their lives in neighbouring Bihar, government officials told the AFP news agency.

Bihar Flood: Death toll mounts to 40, IAF chopper drops relief material in Patna

As many as 40 people have died and many are injured in the state due to incessant rain and floods in many parts of Bihar, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, 40 people are dead whereas nine are injured, due to heavy rainfall and flooding in the state.


On Tuesday, the government deployed IAF choppers to assist in relief and rescue operations. Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter dropped relief materials in the flood-affected areas of Rajendra Nagar in the state capital. Boats were also being used to rescue stranded residents from the area.

Bihar floods: Death toll rises to 97

The water of level of Punpun and Ganga rivers in Bihar continued to recede on Sunday, even as the death toll rose to 97 from 73 in 15 flood-affected districts of the state, officials said.

Other rivers including the Burhi Gandak, Kamala Balan, Baghmati, Mahananda are also showing a declining trend in water level, they said.

Punpun river's water level is receding at the rate of 3 cm per hour at Sripalpur, Patna District Magistrate Kumar Ravi said.

It has seen a fall of 90 cm since Saturday, he added.

Meanwhile, the death toll increased to 97 from 73 in the past 24 hours, as people lost their lives in the affected districts due to incidents of drowning, electrocution, house collapse and falling of trees, a disaster management department release said.
