ADILABAD: Though there are over 155 deaths in the tribal regions during the last four months, the medical officials working in the Agency areas have been claiming that there was just one case of diarrhoea and no incidence of malarial fever.
Exposing this gross under-reporting, five deaths occurred on Friday. While two deaths occurred in Indervelli mandal, one each was reported from Utnoor, Narnuru and Kiramari mandals. Quite tragically, all the victims were children.
The sad state of affairs in the tribal areas and the under-reporting by the lackadaisical medical personnel has not escaped the notice of the district administration. The situation is grave in the mandals of Narnoor, Jainoor, Sirpur (U), Utnoor and Indervelli mandals, where a number of tribals are reportedly suffering from malaria, diarrhoea, viral fevers and other seasonal diseases.
Unofficial sources said over 500 persons have died during the last four months. The officials confirm 150 deaths, but claim that they were due to reasons other than diarrhoea and malaria. There are several vacancies in the PHCs functioning in the tribal areas and several medical officials have been brought back to the plains on deputation.
