Child dies of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in Bihar
As per official data, 121 deaths were reported at the government-run SKMCH, which handled the largest number of patients in the district, while 21 deaths were confirmed at the Kejriwal Hospital.

Muzaffarpur: A child died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar on Sunday (March 29,2020). "A child has lost his life due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome at Sri Krishna Medical College & Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur," Dr SK Shahi, SKMCH Superintendent said.

This is the first AES related death in the district this year. Last year over 140 children died due to AES in the district

The State has reported a total of 23 deaths due to vector-borne diseases till July 20 this year. JE claimed 21 lives while two people died of malaria.

At least 48 persons have lost their lives in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and other such Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) out of 331 cases across Assam this year, the National Health Mission (NHM) said on Wednesday. The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) held a video-conference with all districts to review the status of AES and JE in Assam, a joint statement by the health department and the NHM's state unit said.

"The state currently has 331 AES cases and 48 deaths, which includes 148 Non-JE cases, 24 Non-JE deaths and 183 JE cases, 24 JE deaths," it added.

The deceased has been identified as 53-year-old Thageshwari Devi, a resident of Ward No. 3 of CD Road area in North Lakhimpur town.

COVD-19 affects fight against JE

GUWAHATI, Aug 20 - With the majority of the workforce in the Health department engaged in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of sample collection to detect Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has gone down considerably in Assam compared to last year, a source in the State Health department told The Assam Tribune.
The State has so far recorded as many as 311 positive cases of JE this year. Correspondingly, the disease has claimed 44 lives across the State and around 29 patients are still undergoing treatment.

A total 11 out of 76 children admitted to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have died, the hospital said on Wednesday. As per the hospital's report, a total of 60 children were discharged so far after recovering post-treatment from the hospital.

Two children are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in the hospital. Last year over 140 children died due to AES in the district...

Bihar: 11 children died due to AES at Muzaffarpur hospital from March this year

A total of 77 children were admitted to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) here with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome/Japanese encephalitis from March 27 this year, out of which 11 of them succumbed to the illness.

According to data from the hospital one child has been admitted in Ward-II and 62 children have been discharged after treatment.

Last year over 140 children died due to AES in the district...

Patna: Some of the children in Bihar who recovered from chamki fever – the local name for acute encephalitis syndrome – have developed symptoms of ‘post-encephalitis syndrome’, the impact of which experts say could last a lifetime.

Last year, 598 children in Bihar got chamki fever, of whom 130 passed away while the rest recovered. When this reporter contacted the families of some of these children, they said that after recovering from the fever, their children have developed problems indicative of mental and physical distress, including fatigue and weight loss.

Sonam Kumari, a four-year-old resident of Kanti in Muzaffarpur district, had a fever last year and was diagnosed with AES, and then recovered. Uttam Giri, Sonam’s grandfather, said, “Earlier she was very smart. She used to play a lot and liked to study. But after recovering from the fever, she has became very lethargic. She talks less and stays at home instead of playing with other children. Her schoolwork has also suffered.”

“We are concerned about the change in her behaviour and are planning to take her to a good paediatrician,” Giri added...
