Comment: The NHM report to July 13 in post #124 reported 7,301 JE tests conducted and a combined total of 801 AES/JE deaths. As noted at the time, this report did not fully capture ongoing events in Bihar and Assam. The numbers being provided by the Union government are out of date and not in agreement with the NHM report which reports for example 363 deaths in West Bengal, 118 in UP, 115 in Odisha, 28 in Maharashtra. Combining all available data, it is likely that the number of AES/JE cases exceeds 8,000 with around 1,200 fatalities. - Ro

The Union government has informed the Lok Sabha that 360 people have died of brain fever and 302 of them are from Bihar and Assam.

A total of 872 people in Bihar have been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Of these, 176 died due to infection. Of the 947 cases reported in Assam, 128 have died. 502 people have contracted the disease in Uttar Pradesh. Of those, 21 died. In West Bengal, 464 people died of the disease while 30 died.

But in Odisha, 611 people were diagnosed with brain fever, of which only one died. In Tamil Nadu, 348 people have been diagnosed with the disease but they have returned to life. 182 people in Karnataka, 101 in Meghalaya and 87 in Tripura have been diagnosed with the disease.

While the number of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) has been less in the state of Maharashtra, in comparison to other north Indian states, a data shared by the state's health department showed a steady increase in the number of cases since past three years.

While three years ago in 2017, the number of AES cases was only one and in 2018 there were 48 cases, this year on 2019, within six months, around 74 cases are already reported in Vidarbha region of the state.

News reports for the last couple of days have been omitting the full picture by not reporting on AES cases & deaths in Assam. To July 20, JE confirmed cases made up only 28% of the total AES caseload and constituted only 45% of the fatalities. Over the past 2 days, 19 confirmed cases of JE have been reported with 6 fatalities. It is likely that a larger number of non-JE confirmed AES cases & deaths have occurred in the same period. My estimate of the true AES toll in the state is around 1,700 cases with 240 fatalities. - Ro

GUWAHATI, July 23:With four more deaths on Tuesday, the death toll in Japanese Encephalitis has gone up to 114, a bulletin of National Health Mission (NHM) said here.

A total of 495 people have been tested positive for JE in the state, it also said.

Of the four death cases, one has been reported from Dima Hasao, one from Goalpara, one from Lakhimpur and one death case has been reported from Sonitpur district, the bulletin said.

Shillong, July 24 (IANS) One more person died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Meghalaya on Wednesday, taking the toll to four, while 66 have tested positive for the disease, officials said.
Jobath A. Sangma, who had tested positive for Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, passed away at his residence in West Garo Hills district, District Magistrate Ram Singh told IANS.
?Sangma was working as National Rural Livelihood Mission cluster coordinator in Rongra, South Garo Hills district, where he must have got infected,? Singh said.
Health Department officials said the first case of a patient dying of Japanese Encephalitis, which is also known as brain fever, was first reported on May. The second death took place in June while two people have died this month.

Mumbai: State health minister Eknath Shinde addressed a press conference on Thursday in the wake of a surge in viral diseases and encephalitis fever (chamki) which claimed 200 lives in Bihar. The minister stated that adequate preventive measures had been taken after one death from Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was reported in Gadchiroli.

JEV is a mosquito-borne viral infection that was reported in Maharashtra?s Vidarbha region, with 7 confirmed cases, 15 suspected cases, and one confirmed death.


Suspected cases of JEV and Chandipura virus (CHPV) have been reporteded from Amravati, Yavatmal, Washim, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Latur and Beed. CHPV is known to result in the highest mortality and has a fatality rate of more than 50 per cent. Both infections are known to cause acute encephalopathy (severe brain damage), which in turn can be fatal.

In 2019, 124 have died from Japanese Encephalitis in Assam

Guwahati, July 26 (IBNS): Japanese Encephalitis has claimed the lives of 124 people this year in Assam with four more casualties being reported in past 24 hours.

According to the National Health Mission (NHM), a total of 124 deaths and 544 positive cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been reported till Friday in the state.

As many as 32 out of 33 districts in Assam are now affected by the disease. No reports have come in from Kokrajhar.

In past 24 hours, one person each has died in Chirang, Barpeta, Dima Hasao and Sivasagar districts.

News reports for the last few days have been omitting the full picture by not reporting on AES cases & deaths in Assam. To July 20, JE confirmed cases made up only 28% of the total AES caseload and constituted only 45% of the fatalities. Since then, 85 confirmed cases of JE have been reported with 20 fatalities. Statistically, an additional 218 AES cases with 24 fatalities may have occurred in the same period. My estimate of the true AES toll in the state is around 1,940 cases with 275 fatalities. - Ro

A month after 153 children died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, six fresh cases were reported in the district on Saturday, leading to panic among health officials.

According to District Health officials, two of the six children admitted at the Shri Krishna Memorial College Hospital (SKMCH) are critical. "Four children are undergoing treatment in the general ward, while two are in the Intensive Care Unit," officials said.

The district health authorities in Dhubri are on alert following detection of 20 cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and 55 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) across the district.

Dr. S M Imdadullah, joint director of health services, Dhubri, on Saturday confirmed death of eight persons including one minor due to AES while JE has claimed one life so far in the district.

The child is Dhanraj Kumar, son of Surendra Choudhary of Sitamarhi Runeisadpur. He has been admitted to PICU. Dr. Brij Mohan, senior doctor of the Department of Pediatrics said that even during this season there are aces and ailing patients coming in.
