It was not easy to win the war due to the outbreak of encephalitis, this slogan proved effective Gorakhpur News

Gorakhpur, JNN. It was not easy to control this war in Kushinagar, which has been completely infamous for encephalitis. There was no such area in the district where children and youth do not fall prey to this disease and fall into the cheeks of untimely times. Hospitalization and death toll were in the hundreds. Somebody's lap was listened, then someone's face was destroyed, not only did he become destitute, but in these two years, the steps taken by the administration did not only reduce the number of deaths, but also hospitalization and medical colleges. There has also been an unprecedented decrease in the number of patients referred.
The battle against encephalitis, the biggest effective weapon, proved to be the slogan of Jab Saab Hoga Sang. People understood the meaning of this slogan and went on to participate in the cleanliness awareness campaign that was run from time to time by the administration. The administration's planned strategy of dealing with it proved to be a panacea. Sanitation campaign was conducted in each village with the cooperation of common citizens and princes by fixing programs throughout the district. The youth gave shramdaan. The effect of this is that people became aware of cleanliness and are now focusing on cleanliness.
Emphasis was also laid on awareness camps. On the other hand, anti-larvae were sprayed at water logging sites to eliminate mosquitoes. On the suggestion of the administration, people started putting diesel or kerosene in water logging sites, drains around the house. --- Counseling took place here - The team of doctors consulted the villagers by going to the villages of Dudhi, Tamkuhiraj, Severhi, Vishunpura, Kasaya, Fazilnagar development block of the district, then the initial symptoms and treatment of the disease Told in The most important role was played by Asha, ANM and Anganwadi workers, who started their door-to-door attendance under the Dastak and Communicable Disease Campaign started last year and brought the victims to the hospital. Attempt to make aware with vaccination has also become meaningful.

Bihar encephalitis deaths: Central team says heat wave key factor in outbreak
AES is an umbrella term for infections that cause swelling in the brain. Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, East Champaran, Sheohar and Sitamarhi were the worst-hit districts this time.
Written by Kaushik Das Gupta |
Muzaffarpur |
Updated: September 12, 2019 7:08:39 am

A high-level team of specialists constituted by the Centre to review the surge in acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) cases in Bihar this year believes the heat wave was a factor behind the nearly 200 deaths, making it the first major AES outbreak in the state since 2014.

Dr Arun Singh, who led the central team, says the affected districts had temperatures of over 40 degrees for several days at a stretch. ?We know that the children played outdoors in high heat? The combination of extreme heat, exhaustion and micro-nutritional deficiency can be lethal,? he says, calling for ?more research on this triad?.
...
The heat in Bihar this year was unrelenting with no rainfall, points out Dr Shakeel, a Patna-based physician and Jan Swasthya Abhiyan activist. ?Malnutritioned children are ill-adapted to deal with such heat. Their thermo-regulatory mechanism does not work well.?

Dr Singh says they found that research groups had ?pre-set positions on the outbreak?. ?Because of Muzaffarpur?s proximity to Gorakhpur (in Uttar Pradesh), some researchers talked about Japanese Encephalitis, while others repeated the now well-known litchi theory? We did not carry any baggage, and the ministry supported our open-mindedness. Our first task was to save lives and establish logistics for the purpose. And as far as the cause of the disease is concerned, we let the patient lead the way.?

He adds, ?While treating the children, we found their liver was enlarged, muscle tone was low, and they had high heart rates? (We) were dealing with dysfunctioning of more than one organ. The muscle biopsies showed the mitochondria were affected? We sent blood samples to NIMHANS. They revealed the children had severe carnitine deficiency. The job of carnitine is to transport fatty acids to mitochondria, which produce the cell?s energy? We administered carnitine to two children, and their metabolic rates normalised.?

In general, JE is confirmed in less than 30% of Encephalitis cases and less than 50% of fatal cases in Assam. Publish Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2019 06:29 AM (IST)

Jagran Correspondent, Unnao: Two children died on Saturday from district hospital. The 12 fever victims have been admitted to the district hospital where they are undergoing treatment. Due to the shortage of beds due to fever and diarrhea in the hospital, they do not get stretchers and wheelchairs.

Chief Minister is worried about communicable diseases. He is constantly campaigning to get control over infectious diseases. Even after that the municipal bodies are not conscious of their obligations. As a result, infectious diseases continue to spread. In the Emergency of the District Hospital, 12 patients were admitted for fourteen hours and 17 patients of diarrhea from 12 pm on Friday night to 2 pm on Saturday. Among the fever patients, Danish 3 son Arif, resident of Kashiram Colony of the city, was admitted to the district hospital by relatives. He had high fever and also had tremors. Seeing the serious condition, the doctor referred to Halat Kanpur. On reaching Kanpur, he has died.

Similarly, Vidya 9, daughter of Ghanshyam, a resident of Achalganj area, was having high fever for several days. When the condition worsened, the family brought him to the district hospital. From where he was also referred to Kanpur, but the family did not take him to Kanpur and took him to a private hospital where he also died. Patients do not mind the stretcher: On an average, three hundred patients suffering from infectious diseases are coming to the district hospital every day. 30-35 are being recruited in these. Due to the rush of patients, they are also not getting the necessary facilities. Even the wheel chair and stretcher are not available. Only the Timardar takes the patients from the emergency to the ward.

Afratfri from the form of prescription to take medicine: Patients are facing chaos from getting the form to taking the medicine. Along with this, patients also have to install long lines for blood etc. This causes them to struggle with chaos.

Encephalitis is no more a dreaded word in east UP Yogi initiative tames killer disease
Tuesday, 17 September 2019 | Biswajeet Banerjee | Gorakhpur

Encephalitis is no more a dreaded word in eastern Uttar Pradesh. In the previous years, this killer disease had taken the lives of thousands of children but now people are ready to wage a war against it with the help of government schemes and improved health facilities at the village level.

The figures say it all. In 2016, encephalitis had taken the lives of 715 children in eastern UP and in 2017, the toll was 748. After this the mortality figures showed a declining trend and in 2018 278 children died of encephalitis while till August 31 this year, only 38 children have fallen prey to it in Purvanchal, considered the hot bed of this killer disease.

?The figures are really a source of encouragement for us. We fought hard to control this menace and now it seems we are succeeding,? Dr Ganesh Kumar, principal of BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, told this reporter.

All arrangements for first aid and treatment of encephalitis patients have been made, but these days the treatment centers are being grossly negligent. These ETCs have become a sham. There is neither doctor duty nor staff nurse here. The CMO directs that upon seeing the symptoms of high fever, tremors, etc., check him and treat the patient by recruiting him. If the condition is serious, refer him to the district hospital But instead of recruiting patients in these ETC centers, doctors are sending them directly to the district hospital. This is the reason why these ETCs are empty and four children are being treated after being admitted to a single bed in the district hospital. There are a total of 17 ETC centers for the treatment of encephalitis patients in the district's community and primary health centers, which includes medicines and medicines related to encephalitis, Saxon machines, nebulizers, oxygen, etc. besides doctors and staff nurses. Forty percent treatment centers are not opening lock everyday. In such a situation, the patients who are coming are directly shown the way to the district hospital. CMO Dr. Dhirendra Kumar says that wherever there is negligence, strict action will be taken against the doctors and personnel posted. Oxygen etc. equipment is available.

Acute Encephalitis Syndrome strikes north Bihar again, 2 children dead

Two children have died after a fresh bout of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) struck north Bihar again this week, an official has confirmed.

?Children afflicted with AES are coming to the hospital at regular intervals but only two have died in the past one week,? Sunil Kumar Shahi, superintendent of the state-run Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, said over the phone on September 20, 2019.

SKMCH is the only advanced medical facility equipped to treat encephalitis cases in the district, which has been the centre of AES cases earlier this year.
...
According to him, 30 cases were reported in July, 18 in August while at least 12 cases have been reported this month. In all, 647 cases have been reported from this year out of which 161 children died.

Meanwhile, media reports have claimed that the number of children who have died is eight.

?I told you so?

Director of the National Research Centre on Litchi, Vishal Nath said litchis had never been the reason behind the AES epidemic and the sudden outbreak of this disease at this time had proved that.

Comment: The director is being disingenuous. Just because kids die of Encephalitis in September doesn't mean that Litchis played no part in the outbreak in June. Encephalitis can of course be caused by a variety of pathogens and Sep-Oct is high season for mosquito-borne Japanese Encephalitis outbreaks in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. - Ro
