Four more JE cases detected
Aug 18, 2016 thesangaiexpress

IMPHAL, Aug 17 : Out of 46 blood samples tested yesterday, four were found positive of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) taking the total number of positive cases to 39.
Of the four persons found positive for JE yesterday, two belong to Churachandpur, one to Sadar Hills and one to Wangjing, Thoubal district.
...
http://www.thesangaiexpress.com/four-je-cases-detected/

Comment: 39 cases & 4 fatalities were reported to Aug 9th. These latest would bring the tally to at least 43. The number of samples being tested implies a much larger number of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases are being treated than just the officially reported JE cases. - Ro

Dengue outbreak hits State
...
Besides dengue, other vector-borne diseases -Japanese encephalitis, Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) - have claimed as many as 173 lives this year till August 17.

Of the 173 cases of death, 78 deaths have been confirmed due to Japanese encephalitis, state Health Department sources said.
...
Sources pointed out as many as 1,511 cases of AES have been detected of which 360 cases have been confirmed as JE and 458 cases as dengue.
...
http://www.sentinelassam.com/ghy_cit...1#.V7b7DJgrKUk

Comment: In the above report, JE cases & deaths are considered a subset of AES cases. This is not consistent in reporting from Assam. For example in the report below from earlier in August, the JE and AES cases are added to get a total number of cases. In other states, the practice is to report JE as a subset of AES. It seems likely that there have been 24 more AES deaths in the past 17 days of which 9 have tested positive for JE. - Ro

Boy whose kin wanted compensation dies

TNN | Aug 20, 2016, 10.35 PM IST

PILIBHIT: The district authorities on Saturday ordered an autopsy of a 13-year-old boy, Karan, who had been diagnosed as suffering from encephalitis and had been admitted to a private nursing home at Pilibhit on August 17. The boy died at 11.40 pm on Friday. The viscera has also been ordered to be preserved. If poisoning is proved, action would be taken against the guilty, ADM AK Siani said.
According to doctors attending to the boy, they had repeatedly advised the patient's family to shift him to any other hospital having the facility of a chest ventilator as he was also having respiratory distress. However, the family had deliberately declined to follow the medical opinion and had kept on waiting for the boy to die as they were determined to claim compensation from the doctor for the "death".
