Bhubaneswar: The State Health department is on tenterhooks after the death toll due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) reached 16 in Malkangiri on Tuesday. Reports said, a five year old boy breathed his last at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) after battling for life for eight days.

DHH sources said, around 31 children are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital for showing symptoms like fever, vomiting and fatigue. Of the 31 samples sent to regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), 15 tested positive for JE, the sources added.

?We are keeping a close watch on all the patients. Most the children are showing symptoms of improvement. We hope that they will recover soon,? a medical staff said.

Gaya: Altogether, 22 Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases have been confirmed so far and the high incidence of the disease, despite claims of hundred percent immunisation of children in the vulnerable age group (0-15), has worried the district health officials. Altogether, 114 patients were admitted to the ANMMCH this season with encephalitis symptoms. Of them, 22 tested JE positive, ANMMCH superintendent said Dr SK Sinha.
Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and JE together have so far claimed 35 lives, said ANMMCH sources.

Bhubaneswar: Japanese Encephalitis (JE) continued to create havoc in Malkangiri with two to three children succumbing to the vector borne disease every day.

Similarly, another two children reportedly lost their lives in the morning on Tuesday taking the toll to 29 in the district.

The two children who died today are Priya Madkami of Badali village and Dinesh Padiami of Namakanda village of the district. While Priya died during treatment at the Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Dinesh succumbed in his house. Both the children are around five years of age, according to information.

Japanese Encephalitis continues to claim lives of children in Odisha?s Malkangiri district as three baby girls died of the vector-borne disease taking the death toll to 33.

While Swati Matam of Sindhikela under Mathili block died late last night, Saraswati Kumbhar of Pitakata succumbed to the disease this morning. Similarly, Rasmita Gaud of Mundaguda village died today while she was on the way to hospital.

Ro' Comments: We have reports in this thread of 33 confirmed encephalitis deaths in Odisha to October 5th. Two fatalities were reported in Karnataka to July 10. Delhi reported a death on July 22. Manipur reported 4 deaths to August 10. Madhya Pradesh reported 37 cases with 14 fatalities to August 11.Telangana reported a fatality on Aug 14. Uttar Pradesh reported 324 deaths at BRD, Gorakhpur to Oct 3rd implying that 42 deaths occurred at other facilities. Maharashtra reported 3 cases of AES, 1 fatal in the Week 28 IDSP report.

Putting all of this together, confirmed fatalities now total to 873 an increase of 225 since the end of August.

Havoc in eastern encephalitis continues. BRD Medical College in the last twenty-four hours, 23 new patients were admitted and three others were killed. Nehru 111 patients are being treated in hospital.

Among the three people killed in the three-year Satyaveer Deoria, Maharajganj fifteen years of Priyanka and Siddharth Ajit includes thirteen years. Twelve of those admitted in Gorakhpur, Maharajganj three, Deoria, Kushinagar Sntkbirnagr and two and one each from Siddharthanagar and Mau patients. Since January this year, a Medical College in 1279, of which 331 patients have been admitted have been killed.
