Kolkata: As north Bengal grapples with encephalitis and its deadlier variant Japanese encephalitis, residents of Kolkata have little to fear about the infection, according to a senior doctor at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine.

Virology department-in-charge at the facility Dr Nemai Bhattacharya told PTI, "Kolkata has little chances of being infected by the encephalitis virus. It is mostly a rural disease."

Bhattacharya said the rate of its incidence in rural areas was higher because of the environmental factors there.

Given the regular deaths at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital due to encephalitis, patients and their kin have started expressing concern with the treatment method. Encephalitis claimed four more lives in the past 24 hours at the NBMCH taking the death toll to 103 so far.

The victims were Swapna Barman (12) of Mekhliganj in Cooch Behar district, Jaya Shaiba (22) of Banarhat, Arjun Singh of Goalpukhar in Uttar Dinajpur district and Dilip Saha (65) of Dinhata.

Comment: As always, some points about these figures. 1. Media outlets are now reporting Assam's death toll at above 350, my latest figures are 266 AES and 122 JE. This would suggest that for Assam, the death toll from encephalitis is found by adding the AES & JE deaths. I worry that this method is not applied consistently to other states in this table. 2. Bihar's 159 is almost certainly low and does not include deaths from Gaya - my toll for Bihar is 194, Patrika, ETV, the Statesman, have all quoted figures higher than 159, the facebook page "Fight against acute encephalitis syndrome" quotes the official state toll at 193. 3. On August 4th the MOH released figures 1,183 AES cases, 208 fatalities from West Bengal with 176 cases and 31 deaths positive for JE. Fatalities have occurred since then. 4. Arunachal Pradesh has reported 3 fatalities and one fatality each from Rajasthan and Jharkhand has been reported in the media. 5. Gujarat has reported 16 AES deaths, some of which have tested positive for Chandipura virus. 6. Most recently reported toll from BRD, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh is 144 lives. - Ro

However, the overall death in the mosquito borne diseases in West Bengal touched at 225 in this monsoon.

Official sources said a patient, the resident of Kurseong, who was admitted to the NBMCH today succumbed to acute encephalitis syndrome.

Talking to reporters, Dr Amol Mushahary, Health Officer for Malaria, Kokrajhar said that five people, including a minor died and several others affected by Japanese Encephalitis in the last four and five months. Joya Machahary (24) of Kaliphukuri died on June 23 and Sanikio Brahma (15) on July 2 at RN Brahma Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar. Karim Ali (30), resident of Kutamari near Bhotgaon died on July 28 and Binoy Nath (30) of Gendrabilw died on July 19 at Lower Assam Hospital, Bongaigaon and Narendra Nath Brahma (72) of Kokrajhar town died on July 5 at Guwahati Sun Valley Hospital.

Encephalitis toll rises to 226 in North Bengal

With one more encephalitis death, the toll in the dreaded disease in West Bengal rose to 226 today.

Official sources said the latest victim was Minu Santhal, a Twenty-two-year-old resident of Dooars, who died in the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). With her death, the toll in encephalitis in North Bengal that bears the brunt of the incidence, increased to 152.

The sources said another 21 patients were admitted at the NBMCH with encephalitis syndrome.

GUWAHATI: The death toll of adults suffering from Japanese encephalitis in the state is being considered exceptional in the global context. Japanese encephalitis mostly affects children and young infants, but the anomalous case of adults contracting it in Assam has compelled researchers and health experts to admit that proper evaluation and study of the disease is the need of the hour.

As of Saturday, the total number of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) cases was reported to be 1,694 with a death toll of 281, and JE positive cases touched 659 with the death toll at 129. Of the 659 JE positive cases, 205 were of patients below the age of 15 years of whom 22 succumbed. Those above the age of 15 years registered 454 positive JE cases with 107 dead.

Muzaffarpur in Bihar is as infamous for encephalitis as it is famous for its shahi litchis. Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) has been a leading cause of child deaths in the state. Till the time of filing this report, 210 children across Bihar had died of AES since May this year. According to official figures, since 1994, Muzaffarpur alone has witnessed 995 AES-related deaths of children. Unofficial estimates put this figure at at least 1,800 in the district utterly lacking healthcare infrastructure.

I contacted Alok Gupta who wrote the "Fruit Scare" piece in the post above. Official figures for encephalitis deaths in Bihar were NVBDCP: 159 to July 31st, State: 193 to Aug 5th. My total was 194 and I was curious as to where his figure of 210 came from.

I will defer to his research & update my total accordingly. Why the diminution of the fatality figure occurs as it travels from local to state to national officials is anyone's guess, but the same happens with Dengue etc. With regard to kids dying at home, early on in the Muzaffarpur outbreak, hospitals announced that only fatalities in hospitals would be counted. I read a piece by a doctor in Uttar Pradesh last year (can't find it now) that real numbers of fatalities in that state could be three times higher than official figures for the same reason.

GUWAHATI: The state continued to suffer from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with the total number of AES cases reported to be at 1,734 and JE positive cases at 664. The total number of deaths due to AES was at 283 and that of JE was at 130.

As many as 458 adults are suffering from JE with the toll touching 108, while there are 296 JE patients who are below 15 years with 22 deaths.

The deaths due to Encephalitis and Japanese Encephalitis are rising in an alarming pace on a daily basis at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).

Five more deaths due to the dreaded diseases has been reported from NBMCH during last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 110.

Prafulla Ghosh (74) of Hili under South Dinajpur district, Kaimba Kharia (45) of Malbazar under Dooars, Deoki Burman (24) of South Dinajpur, Biplab Singh (15) of Kachakal of Chopra and Baikuntha Sarkar (58) of South Dinajpur died during last 24 hours.

Recruitment of patients and deaths in Purvanchal Inseflaitis is fast becoming the trend. BRD Medical College in the last three days, while 32 new patients were admitted killing eight others. Nehru admitted 96 patients are being treated in hospital.
Among the eight patients who died six years Neeraj Gorakhpur, sun two years, two years, Yash Sharma, Sumant Kumar twelve years of Kushinagar, Deoria eleven years of peace, Siddharth Dinesh and fourteen years of Bihar Ashish discretion and eight years, including seven years.

A rehabilitation centre for survivors of Japanese Encephalitis will be operational at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), as doctors say the patients need treatment even after they are cured of the disease.
While many patients have become paralytic, some patients? limb movement is affected sometimes, doctors said.
"They need a long treatment after their
survival. Around 30% of those patients have become paralytic and they suffered other diseases. So a rehabilitation centre will be opened for them
here," NBMCH sources said.

A resident of Islampur, North Dinajpur, Md Mulana Hussain, 75, meanwhile, died of acute encephalitis syndrome today, taking the death toll at the NBMCH to 111 since July.

Patients are dying routinely from encephalitis at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for the past one month, with 10 more deaths reported in as many days.

One more patient succumbed to the killer disease on Tuesday at the NBMCH taking the death toll to 111. Moulana Md Hussain (75) of Islampur under North Dinajpur was the unfortunate victim.

Dima Hasao free of encephalitis outbreak till now

Even as 26 districts out of 27 in Assam continued to reel from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, Dima Hasao remained free from the outbreak with no new positive cases or any deaths reported from the district till Tuesday.

As for the rest of Assam, two more adults succumbed to the scourge on Tuesday taking the adult death toll to 110 from 108 on Monday. The number of adults infected with the virus also increased from 458 to 462 in just 24 hours. A total of 207 people below the age of 15 were affected with JE and 22 were reported dead. Assam has registered 1,755 AES positive and 669 JE positive cases. The total number of deaths from AES touched 289 and from JE 132.

Centre may initiate Japanese Encephalitis vaccination in Arunachal Pradesh

ITANAGAR: The Centre has assured Arunachal Pradesh that it will consider the request of the state government for vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in all affected districts followed by routine immunisation of children between 1-15 years of age.

"The health department has already requested the Centre for approval of JE vaccination in the affected districts and the latter has assured to consider it in the light of JE data provided by the department," state epidemiologist L Jampa said in a statement here today.

"The immunisation division of the government of India will finalise the districts for JE vaccination only after detailed analysis of the data provided by the state government," Jampa said, quoting Dr R K Jaiswal, nodal officer for JE under National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) of the Centre.
