Bihar's Muzaffarpur district has again been hit by encephalitis with 6 children dead in the last twenty-four hours. The death toll has risen to 9 and over two dozen children suspected to have contracted the illness have been admitted to different hospitals.


On Thursday, 3 children died of suspected encephalitis in Muzaffarpur and three died on Wednesday, district civil surgeon Gayan Bhusan said.

With nine more children dying of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) over last 24 hours, the disease assumed alarming proportions in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district.

Fifty children who have contracted it are in hospitals, with doctors making all efforts to save their lives while new cases were reported from far flung areas of the district.

"There have been 13 deaths due to AES, while 50 children are undergoing treatment at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) and the Kejriwal Hospital. All of them are below six years of age," said Muzaffarpur Civil Surgeon Dr Gyan Bhusan.

Bhushan said that more cases are expected as the disease spreads fast in hot and humid pre-monsoon weather.

A team of paediatricians from Patna Medical College and Hospital, led by additional director of the health department Madhuresh Kishore, also rushed to the SKMCH this morning to take stock of the situation. They minutely examined the ailing children and consulted with the attending doctors. They asked the attendants about the symptoms to get an idea about what led the children to get unwell.?

MUZAFFARPUR: There has been no let-up in the continuous death of children due to the undiagnosed acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) here. Although, officially, only four more children have succumbed to the killer disease since Friday night, the death toll has risen to 30 so far with two more deaths in Jain Nursing Home.

Altogether, 17 children are presently getting treatment at Kejriwal Hospital and 13 at SKMCH besides a few others at Jain nursing home. The hardship of patients is continuing with attendants hiring ambulances on their own to bring children with suspected acute encephalitis syndrome symptoms to hospitals in Muzaffarpur town.

The toll of suspected acute encephalitis syndrome has touched 42. Sixty-three children were admitted to Kejriwal Maternity Clinic of which 27 have died. Deputy superintendent of Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) Sunil Shahi said so far, 41 children have been admitted to the health hub.

Nine children passed away since Manjhi left on Sunday evening.

One additional fatality has been reported from Gujarat. Latest media reports put the number of fatalities in UP at 61. 100+ cases and 44 fatalities have occurred to date in Bihar that do not appear on this report. 13 fatalities have occurred in Malda, West Bengal in the past week. In total the number of fatalities is now 167.

National virology lab to open at Muzaffarpur

PATNA: The Centre has agreed to set up a national virology lab at Muzaffarpur from where at least 38 cases of deaths caused by acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) were reported during the last one fortnight.

A special vaccination drive will also be launched on June 22 and 23 in all the AES-affected districts of Bihar to check the spread of killer virus. A paediatrics ICU will be opened at Sri Krishna Memorial Medical College (SKMCH)-Muzaffarpur in view of the rising number of AES patients. The Centre will contribute 25% of the cost and the rest will be borne by the state government, said principal secretary (health) Deepak Kumar.

These decisions were taken at a meeting chaired by Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi on Tuesday. It was attended by principal secretaries (health) of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The meeting also decided to augment the research work to ascertain the triggering factor of AES in Bihar.

A scientist from Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control is currently engaged in such research work in Muzaffarpur. A team of National Institute of Virology is also on the job. The Centre has agreed to rope in more foreign-based researchers for the purpose.

Magistrates deputed in Muzaffarpur hospitals

MUZAFFARPUR: Acting DM and DDC Kawal Tanuj said here on Tuesday that one deputy collector has been deputed in each of the three hospitals including SKMCH, Kejriwal Hospital and sadar hospital with immediate effect to ensure proper treatment of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) patients besides free distribution of medicines, free meals to two attendants of each patient and free transport to carry patients from one hospital to another for better treatment according to CM Jitanram Majhi's directive, who visited these hospitals two days back.
