Assam second in diarrhoea and encephalitis deaths

NEW DELHI, December 28: Assam has achieved the dubious distinction of being the number two State in the country as far as deaths (474) due to acute diarrhoeal diseases and encephalitis are concerned. Uttar Pradesh leads the list with 663 deaths in the current year. The State has witnessed 268 deaths due to encephalitis and 206 deaths due to acute diarrhoeal diseases.

?Health is a State subject and the responsibility of providing health care facilities to patients primarily lies with the State government,? said a senior official in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

One more child dies, Bihar encephalitis toll eight

A five-year-old child suspected to have encephalitis, a condition that causes inflammation of the brain, died in Bihar?s Araria district on Monday taking the toll from this disease to eight in the last 10 days, officials said.

Araria civil surgeon B.K. Thakur said that while one child died on Monday, there were others admitted to hospital with similar symptoms and who were in critical condition.

(Hariyabara ward no 3,) and Village Bhagmohabat, (Murballa ward
no 112), District Araria. District RRT investigated the outbreak.
Active search for cases done. Deaths occurred in children less than 8
yrs of age. Temporary medical camps organized. Cases treated at
Sadar Hospital, Purnea. Serum samples collected; result awaited.
Health education given.

Latest AES figures from the NVBDCP; http://nvbdcp.gov.in/Doc/je-aes-cd-Dec13.pdf There have also been two fatal cases reported from Karnataka and four suspected Chandipura fatalities reported from Gujarat, Goa has previously reported 2 deaths and Jharkhand 6. UP's toll has now reached 643. Altogether 1,188 AES deaths (counting the JE deaths as a subset of total deaths).

As availability of safe and potable water is becoming a far-fetched dream for many, deadly mosquito-borne Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is rearing its ugly head once again, taking toll on a higher number of people. After reporting a decline in 2012 against the previous year, cases of JE and deaths resulting from the disease are on the rise with 189 people already succumbing till November 2013.

Assam has reported highest number of toll with as many as 129 people dying due to the disease. The country witnessed 745 JE cases which have spurted to 189 up to November 2013, as per the latest data available from the Union Health Ministry. Sources said that this could be on the higher side given that many cases go unreported.

The disease caused by the virus affects the central nervous system and can cause severe complications and even death, is showing a rising trend.
