Italian tourist succumbs to encephalitis at SCB Medical College and Hospital

CUTTACK: An Italian tourist undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital died on Friday. Doctors claimed the 63-year-old tourist identified as Roserio Sebastiano Contiguglia was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition on November 26 with encephalitis. His condition deteriorated eventually and he died in the wee hours of morning on Friday.

Roserio, a native of South Italy, was a physiotherapist by profession and had come to India on a tourist visa.

"The tourist was admitted to the hospital with encephalitis. Later, he was diagnosed with septicemia. His condition was quite critical and he died of multiple organ failure," said a doctor of SCB, who was treating Rosario.

Gorakhpur: Encephalitis in Purvanchal and deaths continues to recruit patients. In the last twenty-four hours and a half years in medical school recruitment Gorakhpur Gorakhpur and Maharajganj Kanhaiya killed while one - a patient admitted.

Nehru twenty patients are being treated in hospital. This year, from January till the last patient enrolled in medical school in 2502, of which 519 have died.

Gorakhpur: With one more child succumbing to encephalitis, the death toll in the viral disease has mounted to 588 in eastern Uttar Pradesh this year.

The child hailing from Siddharthanagar succumbed to the disease at BRD Medical College Hospital here yesterday, officials said today.

As many as 43 patients suffering from encephalitis are being treated at the hospital.

As many as 3494 patients of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome had been admitted to different government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions this year, of which 588 died.

I'm not sure that I agree with all of the conclusions in the above paper. The suggestion that the first, second & third cases could all be infected by the same mosquito is unlikely to say the least. The idea of human to human spread is unlikely. More likely, there is a large reservoir of the virus in pigs & wild birds leading to multiple mosquito carriers. In addition many of the cases are not confirmed JE and might be enteroviral in nature from contaminated water.

Around 1,500 children are dying every year in Malkangiri district due to negligence and indifferent attitude of the State Government and corrupt practices of bureaucrats, alleged noted RTI activist Pradeep Pradhan on Thursday.

He said the information obtained under the RTI in 2012 revealed that around 7,000 children had died from 2007-08 to 2011-12, and on an average, around 1500 children die every year as per the Government report, he said.

He too stated that many cases of death are not reported and ignored by the Government to lower down the figure.

In 2012, due to spread of Japanese Encephalitis, 38 children died in 14 villages in the district between September 1 and December 5. A fact-finding team of the Right to Food Campaign had conducted a study about the reasons of deaths of the children. It had been found that though spread of JE is one of the factors, major reasons are malnutrition and hunger.
