Re: India 2012: Encephalitis outbreaks, 100 deaths

Re: India 2012: Encephalitis outbreaks, 100 deaths

2012 looks like being a very active year for encephalitis with officially 679 cases and unofficially 100 fatalities as of May 6th. In comparison 2011 had 289 cases and 54 fatalities at this time. 2010 had 252 cases and 49 fatalities. The post above shows some of the inept response by the local authorities. Delays have bedeviled the acquisition of new ventilator equipment at Nehru MCH. The latest estimate now is September.
In many cases, the encephalitis is suspected to be caused by one or more enteroviruses that seem to be found in poor quality water. Civil authorities still seem to be focused on mosquito-borne Japanese Encephalitis and as a result advocate fogging and JE vaccination. Other possible causes of encephalitis include measles, herpes, chickenpox and mumps.
Training for healthcare professionals is laudable, but needs to be followed up with adequate support for a healthcare infrastructure. We have had reports last year of three or more patients to a bed. Under those circumstances ventilator support when needed may not be available.
It would seem that nothing much has changed in India in the last year. 1,358 died in 2011. This year, children continue to die. Tamil Nadu has already reported as many deaths as in all of 2011. Last year we reached 100 fatalities on July 15th.

Re: India 2012: Encephalitis outbreaks, 110 deaths - US CDC team visits Gorakhpur

Comment: I'm happy that another international investigation is underway. Large scale Japanese Encephalitis vaccination has been ongoing for the past several years in the area. In recent years, the majority of cases are not testing positive for JE, but seem to be caused by a variety of enteroviruses. Thus polluted drinking water is more likely to be a major cause of encephalitis death than is mosquito bite. This connection needs to be confirmed, and if true, the information needs to be distributed to people like the reporter below. This thread Whose failure? Encephalitis kills 50,000 in 30 years contains much information on the ongoing research into and response to the Encephalitis scourge.

Virologists reach Gorakhpur to find cure for encephalitis
Gorakhpur, Tue, 29 May 2012ANI

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), May 29 (ANI): A team of 15 virologists visited villages that are worst affected by encephalitis near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, with a motive to find remedies to combat the spread of the disease.
Villagers attributed the spread of the epidemic to a lack of vaccination. They contended that in the absence of proper preventive vaccination, a new kind of encephalitis virus has emerged.
Doctors believed that this exercise in collaboration with foreign experts would aid in treating the disease in a swift and effective manner.
"A team of doctors from CTC India and CTC Atlanta and also from the government of India have arrived here to find remedies for the cure of encephalitis. After this exercise, the results would be out," said Dr. Rakesh Saxena.
We are here with our Indian colleagues to observe the situation of encephalitis here and to share knowledge and discuss how to strengthen the situation here and how to address encephalitis," said Dr. Ken from the United States.
According to doctors, the death rate due to encephalitis is 28 to 56 percent. And unfortunately, those who survive may have to endure life as mentally or physically challenged persons.
Mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water cause encephalitis. Therefore, hygiene becomes essential in preventing the disease from spreading.
The symptoms of encephalitis include headache, fever, convulsions, drowsiness, fatigue and the inflammation of the brain. (ANI)
