BERHAMPUR: Suspected diphtheria that has taken Manuspadar village, under Kashipur block of Rayagada district in its grip, reportedly claimed the life of another minor, a six-year-old boy on Thursday taking the death toll to five.

Though there is no improvement in the condition of the four kids admitted to Rayagada district headquarters hospital, they are stable, sources said. The disease has presently affected nine people including two elderly persons who are in their 60s. On the day, a medical team from the state health directorate reached the village to inspect the health condition of the others. During inspection, similar symptoms were found in two other kids Bijay Majhi (3) and Mohan Majhi (5).

BHUBANESWAR : The diphtheria outbreak in Kashipur area of Rayagada district continues unabated with one more child being detected with the bacterial infection on Sunday. With this, the number of patients has touched 15.
The disease has so far claimed the lives of five children in Manuspadar village. While one case has been clinically confirmed, the rest four are suspected as their bodies were cremated before their samples could be drawn and sent for test.
Director of public health Dr Nilakantha Mishra said 15 children and adolescents have been so far detected with the bacterial infection and four among them are undergoing treatment. They are under medication and their condition is stable, he said.

Diphtheria Spreading Tentacles In Three Odisha Districts, H&FW Dept Begins Counter Measures

Bhubaneswar: After its outbreak in Kashipur area of Rayagada, diphtheria is spreading its tentacles in Koraput and Kalahandi districts as well.
A total of 21 cases of bacterial infection have been reported from these three districts so far. Samples have been sent for examination while special health teams are conducting surveillance and taking other precautionary measures.
As per reports, diphtheria has claimed the lives of five in the state so far. 15 cases have been reported in Rayagada, 1 in Koraput and the remaining 4 to 5 cases in Kalahandi. The condition of the one case reported from Koraput is said to be critical. The overall situation in Rayagada district is said to be stable.
Anti-diphtheria serum has been brought and they are been given to the infected persons. The WHO team along with health department officials are visiting villages in the affected districts of the state. The health department officials have urged people to use masks as a precautionary measure.
