Dengue cases in Delhi have seen a sharp rise this year, with nearly 5,000 cases (4,965) reported till October 21 — more than double that of cases seen in the same period in 2022 and the highest in the last five years — going by MCD data.

While the corporation has not been releasing weekly dengue reports since August, data accessed by The Indian Express revealed that the spike in cases was the highest in the month of September with 2,141 cases. While 1,487 cases were reported in October (till the 21st), August saw 1,094. One dengue death has been reported so far, as per data.

On Monday, in a post on X, Delhi L-G Vinay Kumar Saxena said the rise in dengue numbers was worrying and said he had a discussion with the Chief Secretary, NDMC Chairman, MCD Commissioner, and Secretary (Health) to ensure proper sanitation and mitigation of mosquito breeding on a war footing. With the exception of 2021, when 8,975 instances were reported, the total number of dengue cases seen in the national capital so far this year is 7,963, the highest in the last five years.

Since August, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has not released weekly dengue reports. However, data accessed by The Indian Express show that the month of November witnessed the highest increase in dengue instances—2,482—followed by October with 2,003 cases, September with 2,141 cases, and August with 1,094 cases. There have also been 10 cases of dengue deaths thus far.

Out of the 7,963 cases, 6,275 cases have been traced to be from areas that come under the MCD. Other agencies, too, have seen a push in dengue cases; the Lutyens’ Delhi area has reported 177 dengue cases, as compared to 107 in 2022, 78 in 2021, and 31 in 2020. Delhi Cantt has witnessed 275 dengue cases as compared to 163 in 2022, 139 in 2021, and eight in 2020.
