143 people test positive for dengue in State in two days (Karnataka)

In all, 948 confirmed cases reported since January

As many as 143 new positive cases of dengue have been reported in the State in the last two days taking the total number of confirmed cases to 948 since January. As many as 106 out of the 948 confirmed cases of dengue are from the city.

State health officials, who admit that the vector-borne disease is on the rise, said prevention was the only solution. The officials called upon people not to panic as the situation was under control and had not reached alarming proportions like last year.

Although the officials said only two deaths were reported so far, unconfirmed reports said three persons had succumbed to the disease in the last two days of which one is from Bangalore. Dengue fever claimed its first victim in the district this year on Wednesday. The District Medical Officer confirmed that Arjun Rajan (8) from Avoli panchayat in Muvattupuzha died of dengue fever.

Arjun was admitted to Kolenchery Medical Mission Hospital on Tuesday evening after he developed respiratory problems.

Three more cases of dengue fever were confirmed on Wednesday. Two were reported from Udayamperoor and one from Kalady. The number of confirmed cases of dengue has risen to 207 this year.

MANGALORE: One person has succumbed to suspected dengue fever in Sullia taluk.

The deceased is Jayarama (59) a resident of Nalkur Village in Sullia taluk. He died on Thursday. Earlier Dengue had reportedly claimed the life of Nirmala (48) a resident of the same village, two months back.

But district health officials claimed that these were not dengue death cases. According to Dr BV Rajesh, district Surveillance Officer, Jayarama had tested positive for dengue NS1 antigen at a hospital in Sullia. Antigen is not a confirmatory test. Only antibody test is confirmatory. As no antibody test was done, we cannot confirm it as dengue positive,'' he said. Antigen test allows rapid detection of dengue on the first day of fever, before antibodies appear after a week.

While confirming one death due to dengue in the district, the district health officials have admitted that the three other fatalities too could have been due to the disease. Kochi: Health authorities are turning a blind eye, deliberately though, at a time when dengue fever is spreading across the district, especially in rural areas and the three municipalities of Perumbavoor, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam. Virology experts have pointed out that the aggravated presentation and severity of dengue in the State may be possibly due to antibody-dependent enhancement.

580 new cases of dengue in 2 weeks

Karnataka has recorded 580 confirmed cases of dengue in just two weeks. Sudden bursts of rains across the state and poor water supply is said to have resulted in the sudden spurt.
