With the rising cases of dengue in the city, it has also come to light that it is the upper strata of the society that has been hit most by the viral fever. Out of 647 dengue cases reported this year so far, almost 60 per cent cases are from the affluent sections of society.
According to the data from municipal hospitals, the highest numbers of dengue cases (126) were found in E ward, which comprises Byculla-Mazgaon areas.
The G/South (Worli), F/South (Parel, Sewree) and B (Dongri) are other wards that are hit by this vector-borne disease. Incidentally, all these areas had a higher percentage of malaria cases earlier.

Another vector species adds to dengue threat
Pushpa Narayan, TNN | Oct 19, 2012, 05.15AM IST

CHENNAI: Another mosquito species that carries the dengue virus has been spotted in urban areas in the state, raising serious public health concerns amid a sudden spike in cases of the debilitating disease. Entomologists have reported the presence of equal numbers of Aedes albopictus in cities, a species usually found in forests, in addition to the Aedes aegypti that spreads dengue.

There are approximately 3,500 species of mosquitoes. Most of these are vectors, or carriers, of pathogens that cause a variety of diseases including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis and filariasis. Researchers at Centre of Disease in Medical Entomology (CDME) in Madurai, an ICMR institute, say they have spotted an equally high number of Aedes albopictus in cities across Tamil Nadu.

"Aedes albopictus was not uncommon, but today we see as many albopictus as aegypti," said CDME director B K Tyagi. Albopictus, also known as the Asian Tiger Mosquito, was till recently found only in forests, in bamboo stumps and tree holes. But the species has now moved into human habitat, earlier primarily the domain of aegypti.

Red alert sounded to improve anti-dengue operations

Department of Public Health, Coimbatore, has sounded the red alert to intensify the anti-dengue operations in both within and outside the Coimbatore Corporation areas. Deputy Director, Health, Coimbatore, R. Damodharan told journalists here on Saturday that the Department sounded the alert on Saturday.

This comes in the wake of an analysis the Department carried out on dengue and fever cases and related it to the monsoon and geography. The past three years? data suggests that there seems to be a delayed outbreak in dengue this year, as, in Coimbatore dengue cases get reported during the onset of South-West and then North-East monsoons.

This year, because of poor South-West monsoon, there seems to be an outbreak around August-September, Dr. Damodharan said and wondered if it meant the change in bionomics.

Delhi dengue update: 617 ?official? cases0
Oct 21, 2012 at 10:11 AM

The dengue virus continues to hound Delhi with official stats suggesting that the number of cases have risen to a staggering 617 this season. Experts believe the numbers might be much higher because only some hospitals report dengue cases. Like most seasons, the state government is woefully unprepared with the hospitals struggling to provide facilities for the ailing patients.

The dengue outbreak in Delhi seems to be intensifying, with 32 fresh cases reported on Sunday. The health department is in a tizzy, unable to deal with the exponential rise in the number of cases. While official records show that there has been 617 cases, experts believe the numbers might be much higher because the reports only take into account data from 41 government and 13 private hospitals.

No system in place, dengue could sting UP (Uttar Pradesh)
TNN | Oct 22, 2012, 02.26AM IST

LUCKNOW: Dengue has already spread its tentacles in the national capital region and threat of the disease looms large over Uttar Pradesh too. Spread of dengue and other vector-borne diseases seems imminent in the state as infrastructure to keep track of mosquito count is in a shambles.

There is no entomologist in the state despite existence of two posts. Around 35 per cent posts of zonal entomologists who form the second level of the vector-borne diseases monitoring infrastructure are lying vacant. The strength of malaria officers is about half of the required. As a result, surveillance for vector-borne disease suffers. For example, in case of malaria, about 10 per cent of the population at risk should be checked. This is called annual blood examination rate (ASER), which for UP is less than 5 per cent.

Ahmedabad: With temperatures going south, Amdavadis can now enjoy a cool breeze, at least in the evenings. However vector-borne diseases, especially dengue, are still on the prowl here. The city witnessed hospitalisation of 20 patients suffering from dengue in various municipal and private hospitals in Ahmedabad on Friday alone. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation?s (AMC?s) efforts to control mosquito breeding in various parts of the city do not seem to be yielding any results. The civic body collects data of five major diseases ? malaria, dengue, typhoid, cholera and jaundice ? from five municipal and over 165 private hospitals. Dengue cases rise, but officials in denial
October 27, 2012 DC Bengaluru

Almost every day city-based hospitals are reporting an increasing number of dengue cases to the Department of Health and Family Welfare. But ask the department officials, they say the numbers are actually falling over the last few weeks.

?On a daily basis, we have been getting about 20-25 cases of dengue-like fever cases. Of which, two to three cases are being confirmed after the blood tests. We are reporting only confirmed cases to the Health Department,? said Dr Shankar Prasad, Medical Superintendent. Other vector-borne diseases, like gastroenteritis, too are increasing over the last couple of days, he said.
