KOLKATA: Dengue has claimed yet another life in the city. Thirty-year-old Mary Banwar, a support staff at Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, died in the hospital on Tuesday. This is the fifth confirmed death but the list may get longer. Two children had died at BC Roy Hospital on Monday of suspected dengue shock syndrome.

The government is still in denial mode but private hospitals have run out of room and thousands of dengue victims are being treated at home, say sources. Families of these patients have to run to laboratories every day to get the platelet count checked. They are jittery because as in Mary's case, a patient's condition may deteriorate far too quickly to get help.

KOLKATA: The dengue epidemic this year has claimed nine lives so far, though none of them had haemorrhagic fever ? a trend which has left doctors worried.

None of the nine had capillary leak syndrome, which results from very low platelet count. Instead, they suffered organ failures after a bout of high fever. Several patients who are now under treatment at various hospitals are suffering from organ dysfunction as well. The reason could be an altered genome in the dengue virus, say experts.

Around 5-10% of the dengue patients admitted to hospitals are stated to be serious. Very few of them have haemorrhagic fever. Most have suffered organ failures following the usual dengue symptoms ? high fever, headache and joint pain.

A five-month-old baby has become the second to succumb to dengue in a week. The baby, Pujashri, from Annai Sathya Nagar in Greenways Road, Adyar, was admitted to Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital (KKCTH) in Nungambakkam on August 24.

She was declared dead on Thursday by the hospital. On August 24, another toddler had died of dengue at Mehta?s Hospital in Chetpet.

According to doctors in KKCTH, where the baby was admitted, the child had died of complications resulting from dengue. ?The primary cause is dengue. There is enough serological evidence to show that the baby had dengue,? said a paediatrician at the hospital. He however added that this year, hospitals were reporting fewer dengue cases than in the past five years.

KOLKATA: Dengue death toll in the city went up to 16, with three more deaths reported since Saturday night. While nine-year-old Daniel Gomes, a resident of Bhukailash Road in Ekbalpore, died at the Chittaranjan Shishu Sadan on Saturday night, an 11-year-old Adrita Sammadar of Ballygunge died at a private nursing home in Gorky Terrace on the same day. The latest death was reported from Salt Lake, where one Amit Mondal died at a private nursing home on Sunday evening.

Dengue appeared to take epidemic proportions in Kolkata and Bengal as it broke all previous records of casualties with three more deaths being reported from the State Capital on Sunday, taking the official figure of casualties to 7 -- highest in any year since the first strains of the disease hit the city years ago.

Unofficially however the death toll was put to “anywhere between 15 and 17” sources in the Health Department said, adding the total number of those hit by the diseases was about 2,400 though Bengal Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya rejected reports claiming the number of affected people was about 600.

The Minister’s alleged “attempt to suppress the facts” however led to a virtual war of words between Congress and the Trinamool Congress -- both of whom are jointly in power in the State.

While Health Department sources have put the toll figure at six, the minister in charge of the department on Sunday claimed three people have fallen victim to the disease caused by Aedes mosquito. The number of people getting affected from the disease in Kolkata has been rising steadily. In the last three months, Health Department sources said 638 people have fallen ill from dengue in the state capital.

It’s not only Kolkata, the number of people being affected from dengue across the state has also been rising. Government sources said this year, the number of people affected in the state has reached 1,717. Other districts hit by the vector-borne disease are North and South 24-Parganas, Howrah and Nadia.

A blame game has already started between the Health Department and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on not doing enough to control the outbreak of the disease.

Kolkata: As dengue cases continued to climb, the Trinamool Congress-led government and the opposition continued to spat on the toll while an angry Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday asked the media not to carry out ?false propaganda? on the issue.

?As per my reports, only three people have died. Don?t carry out false propaganda on the matter. I shall collect all facts and brief you on Tuesday,? Banerjee, also the state health minister, told media persons at the state secretariat, Writers? Buildings.

However, contesting the chief minister?s figures, Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra of the Communist Party of India-Marxist said the disease has claimed 21 lives.

In a surprising statement, a state minister observed that the government has nothing to do to stop the spread of dengue as the outbreak was governed by ?nature?s law?.

KOLKATA: Dengue outbreak has taken the proportion of an epidemic over the last couple of weeks, but the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is yet to put an extra effort to prevent it from spreading. Sources in the KMC told TOI that the civic body had to "compromise" with dengue awareness campaign this year for want of funds.

However, the KMC has finally woken up and went on a damage-control drive, with mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who even a week ago dismissed the gravity of dengue outbreak by saying it was a "routine" phenomenon, on Monday admitting that the situation was grave and it can take the proportion of an epidemic in some areas of the city. KOLKATA: The rapid transmission of the dengue virus has led experts to believe that a new vector is stalking the city, especially in Salt lake, the fringe areas of the city and along the EM Bypass where hundreds have been infected, along with the primary carrier Aedes aegypti.

Aedes albopictus or the Asian tiger mosquito is a secondary vector of the dengue virus and as lethal as the aedis egypti.

Entomologists say the pattern in which dengue is spreading from the south-eastern parts of the city indicate that the secondary vector has become active.

Dengue: Minister advises Kolkatans not to panic

KOLKATA: State urban development minister Firhad Hakim said on Monday that certain political quarters were spreading panic on dengue. "There is no need to panic. Many people are rushing to hospitals and nursing homes only to be told that they have typhoid, viral fever or some other ailment," Hakim said. "The reality is not what those in the opposition are making it appear."

The minister said that dengue usually strikes after a span of two to three years and this appeared to be one of those years. "Moreover, people too need to be aware. If they don't clean their terrace where water accumulates in water pots or discarded cans, what can the civic bodies do about it?" the minister asked. He attributed the spread of dengue also to irregular rainfall. "Had there been fresh rainfall regularly, the accumulated water would have been washed away," he added.

KMC to publish white paper on dengue

Facing flak for its ham-handed handling of dengue outbreak, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is publishing a white paper on Tuesday.
Claiming that vested interests were spreading misinformation about the number of cases of the vector-borne disease and the number of deaths due to it, member mayor-in council (MMiC), health, Atin Ghosh said that the white paper was aimed at setting the record straight.
According to the statement released by the state health department, in Kolkata, 405 cases have been tested positive for dengue fever and 1,252 people are suspected to have it. Their blood samples have been sent for testing. The Bengal statistics shows that there are total 660 positive patients and 1,856 people suspected to be affected by it.
However, unofficial sources claimed that one more person died on Monday, taking the death toll in the city to 18. Till Sunday, 17 people had died in the city and 21 people in the state, unofficial sources claimed.
