India contributes half of world?s measles deaths

NEW DELHI: India continues to languish behind world averages and in fact contributes to nearly half of all the world?s measles deaths, a study published in reputed medical journal the Lancet.

The study showed that while worldwide measles deaths had reduced, India continued to be a major contributor.

Measles mortality has declined by 74 percent worldwide in the past decade, but it still remains a major concern in India which accounted for 47 percent of all measles-related deaths in 2010.

?Estimated measles mortality in the world decreased from 5,35,300 deaths in 2000 to 1,39,300 in 2010 ? a decline by 74 percent. India accounted for 29,808, or 47 percent, of the global measles deaths in 2010,? the study states.

Several media sources are reporting the figure 47% of all measles fatalities coming from India. By my math, that would be 65,471 measles fatalities in India in 2010.
