Bird flu: Collectors told to be alert

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has instructed all the district collectors to remain alert as avian influenza commonly known as bird flu appears after the monsoon.
The State-level task force committee on avian influenza headed by Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy discussed the administrative preparedness to tackle the deadly disease.
The meeting was informed that rapid response team at district and State-level has been constituted and a control room opened in Bhubaneswar.
Training has been provided to 3,791 veterinarians and para-veterinarians to gather information on suspected outbreak of bird flu and report it to the rapid response team which will alert the control room here.
They will collect serum samples of birds or people affected by the virus (H5N1) and send the same to the control room. The serum samples will be sent for laboratory test.
The Chief Secretary also advised the Animal Husbandry Department to initiate measures to create public awareness through mass media including All India Radio and Doordarshan about the avian influenza, the fatality it causes to human, symptoms of the person affected by the influenza virus and the preventive measures needed to be taken.
Panic spread across the country last year following rumours of bird flu in Maharashtra. However, not a single case was confirmed anywhere in the country.
