Lucknow: Nine more people on Saturday died in cold-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, where dense fog made movement of road and rail traffic difficult, officials said.

Intense cold wave along with thick and dense fog and chilly winds sweeping across Uttar Pradesh has thrown normal life in the state out of gear. The death toll in the recent cold wave spate has now gone up to 50 with 14 more deaths in the state during the past 24 hours in road accidents due to fog. However, the state officials were yet to confirm the number of deaths. While most of the trains passing through UP were running late, air and road traffic was also badly hit by the fog as visibility dropped to 50 metres and below at many places including Lucknow. The state Met department today predicted no relief from the cold wave and foggy conditions for the next couple of days. It also issued warning of ground frost in western UP and visibility below 50 metres and below due to fog at many places in Terai region and eastern parts of the state.

India's Supreme Court has ordered states to provide adequate night shelters for the homeless during the coming winter.

"You should not allow even a single person to die this winter from the freezing cold," the judges said.

Indian-administered Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh states usually experience severe cold snaps.

The capital Delhi is also affected, with one 2008 estimate saying 150,000 sleep rough in the freezing cold.

As many as 44 people have reported to have lost their lives in the last four days as the deadly cold wave continued to sweep across Jharkhand. Looking into the matter, the State Disaster Management Department has proposed to release Rs Five lakh to each district for arranging bonfires to get respite from the biting cold.

?We have proposed to release Rs Five lakh immediately to each and every district for purchasing and distributing wood for bonfire,? said Disaster Management Minister Raja Peter.

Ranchi continued to witness bone-chilling winters on Monday. The city is weathering the cold wave as the minimum temperature has dipped to 5.8 degree Celsius. Along with the capital, many other parts in the State have also witnessed a serious wintry effect. Kanke recorded 1.8 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Monday. The maximum temperatures recorded at these two centres were 22.8 and 22 degrees Celsius respectively.

New Delhi : People in parts of north India Wednesday got some relief from the bone-chilling winds of last few days but the early morning fog continued to disrupt train services. In Uttar Pradesh, the deaths from the cold rose to 105.

In Uttar Pradesh, over 40 people have died in the last two days in cold wave, taking the toll to 105. According to reports, temperatures touched the season’s lowest in certain areas, making life difficult for pavement dwellers.

Officials in Lucknow said special temporary shelters with bonfires were being set up along roadsides in the capital city and other major cities and towns of Uttar Pradesh as the cold wave pushed deaths to 105 across the state.

However, the sun suddenly broke through the grey sky in the afternoon and brought some respite to the people.

“About 33 deaths were reported from in and around Kanpur while seven people had frozen to death in and around Bahraich, which recorded the lowest temperature at 3.9 degrees and a maximum of just 10.9,” an official told IANS in Lucknow.

Cold wave persists in Bihar
Cold wave conditions persisted in Bihar on Wednesday with fog leading to poor visibility, affecting rail and air traffic.

MeT Department sources said Gaya was the coldest place where minimum temperature plummeted to 7.4 degree Celsius, two
degrees below normal.

Patna recorded the minimum temperature of 7.9 degree Celsius while Bhagalpur and Purnia recorded 9.6 degree Celsius.

State disaster management sources said no death has been reported from anywhere so far due to cold. (Posts 5,7,12 and 15 beg to differ - Ro)

New Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) Cold wave sweeping north India claimed 18 more lives taking the nation-wide death toll to 93 even as temperatures rose by a few notches in several parts of the region. Sixteen people succumbed to the chill since last evening in UP and two in Punjab as fog enveloped several places hitting road and rail traffic. In Uttar Pradesh, where the harsh weather has so far claimed 61 lives, the lowest temperature of three degrees Celsius was recorded at Najibabad in Bijnore.

Cold Wave intensifies in Northern India



Cold weather conditions continued to prevail in Uttar Pradesh with death toll reaching to 133. The death toll due to road accidents following foggy weather had touched 133 with reports of 47 more deaths in past 24 hours. Gorakhpur division reported the highest number of 21 deaths followed by six in Banda, five in Agra, four in Kanpur, three in Basti, two each in Gonda, Balrampur, Varanasi and one each in Bareilly and Hardoi. The rail and air services had been paralysed for the past couple of days due to fog with 12 trains beeing cancelled.

9 die of cold in Agra division of Uttar Pradesh, normal life disrupted
Agra, Dec 21: Nine people died of cold in Agra division of Uttar Pradesh during the last 24 hours as the severe cold wave and dense fog continued to disrupt the normal life.


Four people were died of cold in Agra while body of one was found near railway tracks in the city this morning.

Two people were killed in Firozabad district while one each died in Mathura and Mainpuri districts during the last 24v hours, sources said.
