People offer puja to Jwaradamma
Sunday May 14 2006 11:33 IST
<SMALL>CHITRADURGA: Chikungunya, which scared people of this district, is now revered in the form of a goddess.

However, people do not seek any blessings from this goddess called ?Jwaradamma? (Mother of fever) but request ?her? to stay away from the society.

In Chikkajajur taluk, where chikungunya is spread fast, people have lost their hope in the doctors. They think Jwaradamma is stronger than the modern day ?Ashwini Devathe? (gods of medicine), that is, doctors.

This Jwaradamma does not have any temple but people create a doll and call it Jwaradamma. They offer puja and other formalities. Then they throw it out of the town or village itself.

Interestingly, rumour that this Jwaradamma is stronger than chikungunya is spreading faster. Nobody knows whether she is really strong or not. But their belief seems to be very strong.

This is extremely worrisome news to hear considering that we have just heard rumors of a fever, that was thought to be Chikungunya or Dengue, is occuring in Djibouti and this fever later turned out to be bird flu.

This is a major 'cause for concern'.

SHIMOGA: Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who is also district in-charge minister, gave two-day deadline for the concerned officials including Deputy Commissioner to take proper action to tackle chikungunya.

Presiding over the KDP meeting held at ZP here on Tuesday, he expressed his dissatisfaction over the irresponsibility of concerned officials including District Health and Family Welfare Officer (DHO).

??I had visited Harnalli where number of chikungunya patients were admitted to hospital. I have realised that officials had not taken precautionary measures. DC and DHO should take responsibility to provide proper treatment for patients,?? he instructed
