Chandipura virus still a potential health threat
Umesh Isalkar, TNN | May 16, 2011, 02.37am IST

PUNE: The Chandipura virus has claimed 67 lives in the state between 2007 and 2010. First discovered by the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) in 1965, the outbreak of Chandipura Encephalitis has been a periodic occurrence in the state with a brief lull in the number of cases reported in 2006-07.

"The state health department has prepared a micro-plan to control transmission of the virus in endemic areas. Field workers and health personnel are being trained as part of the pre-monsoon preparation because sandflies breed mostly during rains," said state entomologist B R Mane. Sandfly, which spreads the Chandipura virus, is also a cause of 'Kaala Azaar' - a chronic and potentially fatal parasitic disease which is active in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Mane said, "The Vidarbha region of the state is primarily endemic to transmission of Chandipura virus. The outbreaks in the last three years occurred mostly in Bhandara, Chandrapur, Wardha, Nagpur and Gadchiroli districts. Amravati too has reported a few suspected cases since 2009."

Most cases were reported in 2009-10 when 88 people were infected and 15 died. A majority of the infected patients were below 14 years of age. Of the 74 samples sent to NIV, 49 tested positive, said a report of the state health department.

Chandipura virus claims 14 children
TNN | Jul 13, 2012, 01.35AM IST

NAGPUREPUNE: Scanty rains have once again activated the sand fly, known to transmit the Chandipura virus. The virus has killed 14 children since June 15 in six districts of Nagpur circle.

The figures are scary as the deaths have occurred in a short duration. The virus in monsoon is generally known to claim 10-15 children over a period of 3-4 months. This year, the toll has already reached 14 in less than 30 days.

The Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has confirmed the presence of Chandipura virus and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in 17 of the 70 blood samples it has tested from eastern Vidarbha. "Nine have tested positive for Chandipura virus and eight for Japanese Encephalitis. We received some more samples for testing on Thursday," said senior scientist Vidya Arankalle, acting director of NIV....

Monsoon diseases kept away this season
Snehlata Shrivastav, TNN | Aug 27, 2012, 01.30AM IST

NAGPUR: Rains in July and the first half of August did create havoc in many places in Nagpur division covering six districts of Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gondia, Gadchiorli, Nagpur and Wardha. However, the monsoon was mild as far as deaths due to monsoon-related diseases are concerned.

Apart from Chandipura, which claimed the lives of 22 children, the biggest killer has been gastroenteritis, which took seven lives. The other big killers were infective hepatitis, which killed four, and malaria, which took two lives. Two meningitis deaths have also been reported from the area, taking the death toll from all diseases since May till mid-August to 15.
...
The 22 deaths reported from rural areas in six districts due to Chandipura are actually not confirmed cases of the virus, but they had symptoms.
