Bird flu situation under control, no further outbreak: Hakeem
New Delhi, May 07: Bird flu situation is quite under control even though regular countrywide surveillance mechanism is on to check any possible outbreak in future, a top official said.
"The bird flu situation is under control and there is no report of any further outbreak," Animal Husbandary Secretary P M A Hakeem said.
He claimed timely intervention by government authorities helped to effectively contain bird flu to the initial areas of outbreak at Navapur and Ucchal districts.
The secretary said poultry samples are drawn regularly from 38 districts falling within the 200-km radius of the affected areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Five samples are being drawn from nearly 500 talukas that fall under the affected districts including Jalgaon in Maharashtra, which reported bird flu case after some days of the initial outbreak.
Highlighting the on-going surveillance against bird flu, he said samples were regularly being drawn on nationwide scale and were being tested for H5N1 virus.
Since the initial outbreak in Navapur in February, only 50 samples out of 20,0000 samples were tested positive for bird flu virus so far.
Ruling out any element of complacency in this regard, he said "we will have to be on an alert mode".
About 10 lakh birds were culled and poultry farmers got compensation on a 50:50 basis from both state and central governments.
In a bid to provide quick relief to the farmers, central government has so far released Rs 10 crore to affected areas under its animal disease control programme.
