Krushnaprasad: Fear gripped the residents of around 8-10 villages under this block in Puri district after many birds were found dead in the area.

Locals, who suspected the bird or avian flu behind the deaths, demanded a probe.

After getting complaints from the locals, some officials reached the area and collected the carcasses for lab examination.

A rapid response team was also formed for avian flu surveillance. The team also collected blood samples of live birds from the locality for examination.

Bhubaneswar: Bird flu fear still grips Puri district?s Krushnaprasad block area as about 3,000 broilers found dead at different firms in different villages under the block.

Notably, thousands of broilers have been culled during the last four days since some crows were found dead in a jungle near the Chilika lake. It is suspected that the crows were infected with avian influenza transmitted from foreign birds that have visited Chilika.

KENDRAPARA: Even as hundreds of migratory birds have arrived in the water bodies and trees of Bhitarkanika National Park, a flu alert has been sounded by forest and veterinary officials. Chief District Veterinary Officer of Kendrapara Dr Santanu Kumar Takairi said precautionary measures have been taken to detect sick birds in the park and its nearby areas. He said around 20,000 poultry birds have already been vaccinated to protect them from Ranikhet disease and flu. Poultry farmers have been urged to approach the nearest veterinary dispensary to get their birds vaccinated, he added.

Dr Takairi said bird flu alert has also been sounded in Baga Gahana, the heronry of the park where a large number of migratory species have already arrived. The forest and veterinary officials distributed leaflets and booklets among the villagers near the park to create awareness on bird flu, said the CDVO.

Bhubaneswar: The bird flu situation particularly in some villages under Krushna Prasad block of Puri district still remains grim, said Agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy today. He further informed that the State government is taking all possible measures to contain the outbreak.

?The bird flu situation remains grim as crow deaths are also being reported in areas close to the affected villages. Several samples have been sent for examination to Bhopal and Cuttack,? said Maharathy.

Bird flu: Culling of chicken continues, 7,315 killed till now

Krushnaprasad: Culling of chicken continues for a week now in villages under Krushnaprasad block and near Chilika Lake in Puri district following detection of the H5N1 virus in samples of poultry birds and crows.

As many as 7,315 chickens have been killed till now and buried by the district officials after orders from the state government. At least 10 teams have been deployed for the culling of the chicken.

At least 399 were killed on the first day, 276 in second day, 3630 in third day and another 3010 in the fourth day, officials said.

An outbreak of bird flu was suspected after more than 20,000 hens and crows were found dead Thursday. The blood samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal. The samples tested positive for the H5N1 virus, Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) Girija Patnaik said.

Puri: Mass culling of chicken was carried out in the affected villages under Krushna Prasad block of the district today as bird flu situation continued to remain grim. Nearly 1,000 chickens were found dead at a farm in Naba village of the district today.

After the detection of avian influenza virus in four villages under Krushna Prasad block of the district three days ago, the administration began mass culling of chicken to prevent the viral infection from spreading to other areas.

As per reports, 300 chickens were segregated from the poultry farm of one Sunil Nayak of Nandaka village today.

Earlier, on December 16, over 400 birds were culled and buried in two farms at Maluda and Patharganj villages.

According to sources, several teams have been engaged in the culling operation carried out in a phased manner within one km radius of the affected areas at Maluda, Buda Sahi, Sana Sahi, Nua Sahi and Patharghati villages.

Meanwhile the laboratory reports of the blood samples from the infected birds are yet to be received...
