43.7 C: Delhi records highest temperature in 52 years
Staff Reporter
This rise in temperature in April is unprecedented, say Met officials

NEW DELHI:On Saturday the city registered its highest temperature so far as the mercury climbed to 43.7 degrees. The temperature being eight degrees above normal is also the highest that has been registered in April till date in the past 52 years.

The rise in temperature has been unprecedented, said officials at the Indian Meteorological Department. While the maximum temperature has been eight degrees above normal for this time of the year, the minimum too has risen by six degrees to reach 26.5 degree Celsius. Officials of the IMD said Saturday's temperature has been highest for the past 52 years, since the previous high of 43.6 degree Celsius was recorded on April 27, 1958.

Last year, the maximum temperature in April had risen to 43.5 degree Celsius. The all-time high for April was recorded on April 29, 1941 when the mercury touched 45.6 degree Celsius.

The mean temperature for the month of April is 36.2 degree Celsius (maximum) and 21.5 degrees (minimum). Mercury's steady climb has left Delhiites struggling with the heat. ?There is no respite from this searing heat. We have been unable to switch off the air conditioner even in the mornings and late evenings. We are already worried about getting an inflated power bill at the end of the month. The water supply too has been erratic and it looks like we are headed for a rough summer,? said Siddhartha Gusian of Malviya Nagar.

Complaints of erratic water supply were also received from East Delhi. ?There has been a water shortage in the socities in I.P. Extension for the past few days, and this morning our society ran out of whatever little water was stored,? complained Manish Gupta of Ekta Gardens.
