Guwahati, Nov. 11: Government agencies in Assam are getting together and trying to come up with an effective plan to fight the social evil of witch-hunting, which is still prevalent in the state.
Under an initiative of the Assam State Legal Services Authority (ASLSA), various state government agencies have come together to prepare a comprehensive road map to eliminate the menace...
...An official, requesting anonymity, said a bizarre incident that took place on October 2 might have forced ASLSA?s hand.
The superstitious act took place at Shikarigaon in Majuli island where an 18-year-old youth and a woman accused 35 people of being ?witches?. The accused people were kept confined in the village for 22 days and subjected to a public hearing, humiliation and were made to go through a ?purification? ceremony.
According to state government records, between 2005 and May 2013, altogether 66 women have been killed in witch-hunts...
