Lucknow, June 25 One more child, who was taken ill after receiving vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis, died today. The second such death in two days has shaken up the health authorities.

Five-year-old Anil Kumar, who was declared brain-dead a few days after vaccination, died in at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University.

Dr Savitri Thakur, Head of the Paediatrics Department at CSMMU, confirmed the death. His serum test reports, she said, are still awaited.

Two more children were admitted in the Trauma Centre of the CSMMU, suffering from stiffness in the body, fever and severe headache after JE vaccination.

This is the first time children with such acute problems are coming to hospital after JE vaccination. Though some cases of vaccine side effects were observed even last year, those were very mild. The children were discharged after a day or two.

This time, children are showing acute symptoms of encephalitis, indicating post-vaccine encephalitis.

Health authorities aren't sure why this is happening. Dr ML Khatloiya, Director General, Family Welfare, said: "If the blood samples test positive for JE, we can conclude that the virus reached the child before the vaccine started functioning. If they test negative, it must be the work of some other virus."

Dr AK Shukla, the Chief medical Officer of Lucknow, said: "There are two more cases admitted in the trauma centre and they were fine when we visited them in the morning. I believe they will recover soon."

He, however, failed to give any reason behind the increasing number of post-vaccination cases of fever and stiffness in children.
