Training on detection and containment of bird flu

New Delhi, March 10. (PTI): With bird flu affecting some Asian countries, health and veterinary practitioners from India and Southeast Asian countries were trained here at a workshop on early detection and its containment before it threatens human and poultry health.
"Health and veterinary practitioners from India and Southeast Asian countries received training in preparedness and response to avian influenza viruses that threaten human and poultry health," a official statement said here on Friday.
The training of the health personnel was part of a five-day Indo-US workshop on Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response, which concluded here on Friday.
The objectives of the workshop was training the personnel for early detection, rapid response and containment of avian and pandemic influenza at its source and training to State and District levels to provide a broader platform to handle future emerging and re-emerging diseases.
The workshop, which began on March five, was jointly organised by the Central Government, alongwith the United States National Institute of Communicable Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with the US Department of Agriculture, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF.
The 'train-the-trainer' workshop was part of an ongoing collaboration, funded by a grant agreement signed on October 13, 2006 by Geoffrey R Pyatt, Charge D Affairs in the US Embassy, New Delhi and Salim J Habayeb, WHO representative to India.
Bird flu predominantly affects animals, but the H5N1 virus also has made the jump to humans in some countries, killing at least 167 people worldwide since 2003, according to the WHO.
