821 lightning deaths in Orissa in 3 years

Bhubaneswar, Jun 9 (PTI) Lightning claimed 821 lives, while there were 251 sunstroke deaths and 80 people died in flood in the last three years in Orissa, according to a state government data.
Though Orissa was frequently hit by natural calamities like flood, unseasonal rain, drought, hailstorm and thunder shower, lightning took the maximum toll, Revenue and Disaster Management minister S N Patro told reporters after a natural calamity meeting here today.
While 230 people died of lightning in 2010, 229 succumbed to thunder bolt strike in 2009 and 362 in 2008, he said.
As many as 38 people have been killed in lightning till May 25 this year.
There were 98 sunstroke deaths in 2010, 85 in 2009 and 68 in 2008, Patro said.
At least 10 people died in flood in 2010 which claimed 56 lives in 2009 and 14 in 2008, he said.
