The presence of the Deputy Speaker is a major feature of this story. Is her presence to draw attention as an elected official or a response by a government official to a critical event?
The clinical course for these children warrants close attention.

The bolded section was most interesting to me. I have not heard of any "bird flu" (human or bird) in this area. Anyone else aware of it or is this just a political response akin to "we are doing everything possible".

Dengue: 8 children hospitalised

HYDERABAD: Six children from the Pottalapatti area in Vepanjeri constituency represented by Deputy Speaker G. Kuthuhalamma are undergoing treatment at the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital, Vellore, in Tamil Nadu following suspected dengue fever.

Two children from Kadapa district are also being treated. The eight children have been admitted in the intensive care unit. Their age ranges from six months to 14 years.

Dr.Kuthuhalamma, who visited the hospital on August 10 , told The Hindu on Saturday from Vepanjeri that since the cause of the infection had not been identified, the CMC Hospital doctors had sent the blood samples for investigation by private diagnostic centres.

She said a doctor from Chittoor district, Lavanya, was also attending on the patients, who included one of her relatives. The Deputy Speaker pointed out that bites by rat/cat/parrot could be the cause of the fever which appeared to be a new type with symptoms of high fever and convulsions.

If the patients failed to recover, it would lead to death. She said six to eight cases were detected from Puttur area of Chittoor district. She said she would plead with the Government for providing financial assistance to the families of the affected children on the lines of those being extended to those with heart ailments.

Too little information has been provided to allow diagnosis of the illness
affecting the 8 boys. In general, human cases of H5N1 avian influenza have
not presented with neurological features. Previously, Chandipura virus
infection and Japanese encephalitis virus have been associated with
outbreaks of similar disease in Andhra Pradesh. Further information on the
progress of this investigation would be welcomed. - Mod.CP]
