Sunday April 9 2006 12:58 IST GULBARGA: The viral epidemic Chikungunya is still spreading alarmingly with about 40 per cent of the district including Gulbarga city reeling under it.
As per the official records out of 1300 villages about 440 have been affected by the disease making thousands of people immobile due to severe infection in joints.
On an average 700 new cases of Chikungunya are being reported every day, according to deputy commissioner Anjum Perwez. Till March end about 19,000 cases of have been reported in the district.
This does not include a large number of people who take treatment at private doctors.
The deputy commissioner claimed that there was a decline in the occurrence of the disease due to fogging in villages.
Fogging could not be taken in all the affected villages due to shortage of fogging machines and disposable LPG cylinders.
Out of 440 villages affected fogging has been taken up partially in 164 villages. The epidemic is rampant in Shahapur, Chittapur, Sedam taluks and is fast spreading in Chincholi taluk. At present 36 fogging machines are available and 10 more are being procured.
The deputy commissioner has denied that any death has taken place due to Chikungunya.
It is apparent that the health department has failed to arrest the fast spreading of the epidemic.
The administration is busy only in purchasing fogging machines and holding meetings.
Fogging is hardly done in the right earnest anywhere. In Gulbarga authorities claim to have done the fogging in 47 wards. But it has remained visible only in the records of the city municipal corporation.
