Deaths in paediatric hospital spread panic among parents

Even as the Odisha government has ordered multiple probes into the spurt in casualties at the Sishu Bhawan here following suo motu cognisance by the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), panic-stricken parents are taking away their sick children from the paediatric hospital and making beeline at private hospitals.
The famous Sardar Ballav Bhai Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics here has recorded at least 23 deaths of newborns and paediatrics during last four days, spreading panic and anxiety among people here. The hospital recorded at least five deaths during last 24 hours ending Monday noon.
The spurt in deaths began from Friday following which the Hospital authorities ordered for an internal enquiry, which however, has ruled out the allegation of negligence in treatment. A four-member team comprising senior doctors and administrative officers of the Hospital conducted the enquiry, the report of which has already been submitted to the government.

Politics over the death toll at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (SVPPGIP), the premier paediatrics hospital in Odisha also known as Sishu Bhavan, here is gaining momentum as fact-finding teams of Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress today visited the premier childcare institute to take stock of the grim situation as the death toll reached 26 with the death of a newborn this morning who was admitted to the hospital on August 22.

The health minister said the high death rates in Sishubhawan may be because very critical patients from across the state come there after being referred from various other hospitals. "We will review the situation and take all possible steps to minimize the deaths," he said.
Sishubhawan hospital records show around 300 newborn die in the hospital annually.

In the last 24 hours, nine infants have died in the government-run SVPPGIP. Parents of the deceased children attributed the deaths to negligence by doctors, nurses and other hospital staff. At least 21 newborns in the ICU and 300 other kids are undergoing treatment at the hospital and at least 40 of them, including the newborns in the ICU, are in critical condition.

Parents who had brought their kids in serious condition to the hospital alleged that the doctors kept them waiting for their admission to the ICU. A mother whose baby died said the doctors and nurses did not pay attention despite she pleading about her son’s critical condition. Another parent said the doctors are unable to diagnose the infection of his son. Yesterday, parents and relatives of the kids raised a furore in the hospital after the death of two infants who were diagnosed with severe jaundice and respiratory infection.
