Badwani, MP, May 26: About 400 hens have reportedly died due to an unknown disease during the past 10 days at Rajangaon in Sendhwa town in this district.

Rajangaon sarpanch Subhari Bai and up-sarpanch Dev Singh said the hens were behaving strangely. Several of these hens had been provided as a part of employment scheme.

Last year, culling operation had been performed in Rajangaon in view of bird flu threat.

''A team of veterinary experts has been dispatched to Rajangaon to ascertain the exact cause. After last year's culling operation, poultry farming had been stopped for six months,'' Veterinary Deputy Director (Badwani) G S Dabur said.

Dr Dabur said the samples would be sent to Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) for examination.:tiphat:

After the detection of positive bird flu samples in the village of Jalgaon the health authorities have ordered house to house checking of any birds and then killing them. Already culling was completed in 23 villages in Burhanpur district. The authorities have stated to prepare their next face of culling operation in three villages of Barwani district. The main reason to extend the culling operation to these three villages is due to prevent the spread of the avian flu to these nearby districts.

It is just a preventive measure. The villages where culling will begin for 2,500 odd birds include Belghat, Rajangaon and Dhaamnia. Five Rapid Action Response Teams have been instituted for this purpose in Barwani district and all basic preparations were made for the culling and disposal operation. Commissioner of Veterinary Services, Dr Rajesh Rajora told the press the importance and the necessity to initiate culling operation in these villages. Dr Rajora said the culling and disposal work along with house-to-house mop up has been completed successfully in villages around Ichhapur from where positive samples were confirmed. As of now the disinfecting work is being carried on in 2,450 houses in these villages.

About 8,250 birds were culled in the 23 villages near Ichhapur. He also mentioned 300 fresh samples from bordering districts of Maharashtra have been collected and sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) for testing. A total of 114 samples collected from Burhanpur border are under testing at the HSADL. Joint Director in-charge of HSADL Dr H K Pradhan said that the tests on the 114 samples were carried on and the positive samples are concentrated only to a very small area especially near the villages of Jalgaon, which are very close to Ichhapur. Dr Rajora also said that due to security reasons a total ban had been clamped on export and import of poultry and poultry products from Jalgaon and Betul into Barwani, Burhanpur, Khargone and Jhabua district.

HYDERABAD: The Animal Husbandry Department has been maintaining a high state of vigil in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts ever since unconfirmed reports of spurt in cases of bird flu in Bangladesh started to pour in.
While maintaining that it is highly unlikely for the bird flu to occur, given the spate of precautionary measures taken up by the department, since the Maharashtra outbreak last year, officials maintain it is better to be prepared.
Officials have increased checks to regulate and further beef up the existing bio-security measures being implemented in both private and Government poultry farms in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.
Poultry bastions

Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and nearby districts of Telangana have traditionally been the poultry bastions of the State. Regulation and implementation of safety measures in these districts has become vital in the given scenario, officials say.
Trained personnel

In the unlikely event of an outbreak, there are trained personnel throughout the State having enough training to handle any exigencies. "Not a single case has come positive in the last one year. However, we have to be on the alert and that is why we have even provided training to our district veterinarians in handling such situation," says Joint Director of Veterinary Biological Research Institute M. Sudarshan Rao.
Collection of sera and faecal samples from various poultry farms has been going on since one year.
Best practices

On a monthly basis, about 800 such samples are being collected and sent for testing to the Southern Regional Diseases Diagnostics Laboratory, Bangalore.
Officials from the department also point out that so far, the implementation of bio-security measures in top poultry farms in twin cities and outskirts have been more than satisfactory.
"Regular checks in the farms have led to stricter implementation of security measures. The private management of the poultry farms is keen on implementing best practices," an official from the Animal Husbandry Department said.
