A sharp rise in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases has been reported in Assam’s Rangia, leading to concern among health authorities as the outbreak shows signs of spreading in the region. The Japanese Encephalitis cases in Rangia have already led to two deaths, while five other patients are currently undergoing treatment at a local medical facility, according to reports.

The sudden spike has placed the state health department on high alert, with officials stepping up monitoring and response measures to prevent further escalation of the mosquito-borne disease.

Following the increase in infections, health officials have intensified surveillance operations in affected areas. Field teams from the health department have been deployed to conduct ground visits, assess the spread of the disease, and implement immediate containment strategies.​..

​Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have claimed 60 lives in Assam so far this year, according to officials of the National Health Mission (NHM).

Official data show that 15 deaths have been attributed to JE and 45 people have died due to AES across various districts of since January.

The JE deaths were reported from Baksa, Cachar, Chirang, Kamrup Metropolitan, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Kamrup districts, he added.

“On the other hand, the AES deaths have taken place in Baksa, Cachar, Chirang, Goalpara, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Tamulpur, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, Darrang, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Kamrup Metropolitan, Barpeta, Jorhat, Kamrup and Lakhimpur,” the official said.

Health officials said 56 confirmed cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been detected during the current season, while the number of AES cases has approached 500.​..
