A total of 2,357 pigs have died due to African swine fever in four Mizoram districts since March, an official of the state's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department said on Thursday.

After a hiatus of around three months, the fresh outbreak was first reported in Lawngtlai and Mamit districts in the western part of the state bordering Tripura and Bangladesh in the third week of March, she said.

Mizoram did not report any pig deaths due to ASF – a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs – for more than 80 days from December 24, 2024, till the second week of March this year.

“With 140 deaths reported on Thursday, a total of 2,357 pigs have so far died due to ASF and 788 others culled to prevent further spread of the disease,” the official said.​

The outbreak has affected 43 villages and localities in the four districts, with Lawngtlai and Siaha being the worst affected, she said. The ASF outbreak was first reported at Lungsen village in Lunglei on March 21, 2021...

Over 3,050 pigs have died in four districts of Mizoram due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the last one month, said officials of Mizoram’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department on Saturday.

So far, 46 localities in four districts of the northeastern state – Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Mamit – have been declared as ASF-infected zones by the department.

Nearly 1,000 pigs were culled in these four districts to prevent the spread of the disease.

Of the four infected zones, Siaha district is the most affected, with the cumulative death toll of pigs at 1,651.

Officials stated that the hot climatic conditions and intermittent showers are favourable for the spread of the virus.​..

Guwahati: It is a matter of concern that, so far, four epicentres of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been recorded in the state. This has led to compulsory culling of pigs within a radius of the affected areas.

According to sources from the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, the menace of ASF has been noted in the state every year since 2020. This year also, four epicentres of the disease have been discovered across the districts of Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Barpeta. The most recent affected district is Barpeta, and the local administration has banned the sale of pigs and their meat. Culling of pigs has been done in the Barpeta and Sonitpur districts as a precautionary measure, department sources said.​..

​Morigaon (Assam), Jun 4 (PTI) African Swine Fever (ASF) cases have been detected in a village in Assam's Morigaon district, leading the administration to impose restrictions in the area on Wednesday.
The district administration has declared Daponibari village in Dharamtul area as an epicenter of ASF.
According to a directive, villages within one kilometre radius of Daponibari will be considered 'infected zones', while those within a 10-kilometer radius will be designated as 'surveillance zones'.​..

Aizawl: Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), today chaired a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan with senior officials of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary (AH&Vety.)

Department to review the state’s worsening African Swine Fever (ASF) crisis. Led by Secretary Lalsangliana, the team presented alarming figures and proposals to contain a disease that has plagued the state since 2021.

Expressing deep concern over the prolonged outbreak, the Governor emphasised that ASF is no longer a temporary threat but a persistent, endemic crisis requiring immediate and coordinated action. He acknowledged the department’s limitations and stressed the need for inter-departmental collaboration, central government support, and active public participation. The Governor assured full backing for proposals aimed at enhancing containment, compensation, and public awareness efforts.

According to a detailed presentation by Deputy Director Dr. Esther Lalzoliani, the first ASF case in Mizoram was detected in Lungsen village on March 21, 2021. Since then, a staggering 69,411 pigs have died, while another 52,194 have been culled to contain the spread. The outbreak has affected 11,382 households, resulting in an estimated economic loss of Rs 982.16 crore...

Bone marrow samples were collected from the carcasses and sent for laboratory testing, which confirmed the presence of ASF on January 16, she said.
Locals claimed that carcasses of wild boars had been noticed in the Thentlang area since the first week of December last year.
