SIVASAGAR: In a worrying sign, Assam's Sivasagar district has reportedly witnessed an outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis (JE). This deadly disease has purportedly caused three fatalities and 12 people have been affected by it and are currently undergoing treatment.

In addition to it, 13 more individuals are suffering from encephalitis-like symptoms, though these cases are yet to be confirmed.​..

In Bongaigaon and Chirang districts, four people are infected with Japanese encephalitis as of July 16.

Meanwhile, a patient from Chirang district has died, according to doctors.

As per reports, a pregnant woman from Chirang district has also been infected.

The number of cases is likely to increase if precautions are not taken as nine people are currently under the supervision of doctors.

One of the victims has recovered, while another is being treated at a private hospital...

AHMEDABAD, India, July 30 (Reuters) - Viral encephalitis has caused at least 56 deaths in India's western state of Gujarat, forcing authorities to step up surveillance for the disease caused by a viral infection often spread by sand flies and ticks.
Viral encephalitis, which can cause high fever and in many cases affect the brain, is common in several parts of India during the monsoon season, but many of the deaths in Gujarat were caused by the Chandipura virus, a relatively new form that is known to affect mostly children under 15.
Of the 56 dead over the last month, a quarter were confirmed to have died from the Chandipura virus, Gujarat Health Commissioner Harshad Patel said.
"Almost all the patients are children. As far as I know, this virus affects only children," Patel told Reuters about the outbreak.
Patel said that local health authorities have been monitoring encephalitis cases for a month and would continue to keep a close eye on infections in the general population, stepping up surveillance in areas which have reported cases.
A total of 133 cases of viral encephalitis , including 47 cases caused by the Chandipura virus, have been registered in the state of 70 million people in a month, the state government said in a statement...

GUWAHATI: The state of Assam grapples with alarming surge in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases. Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) is at forefront of fight. Since April 1 2024 hospital has admitted 90 patients suffering from deadly flavivirus. This has resulted in 22 deaths.

GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma reported significant increase in JE cases this year. This is in comparison to previous year. Last year we admitted 54 patients. This year, number has risen sharply Dr. Sarma stated "As of now, 40 patients are still undergoing treatment at GMCH, four of whom are in critical condition, while the rest are stable. Unfortunately, 22 patients lost their lives, many of whom were brought to us in the terminal stages of the disease,"

A notable number of patients had initially sought treatment at private hospitals before being transferred to GMCH for tertiary care. Unfortunately, conditions were often severely compromised upon arrival. Dr. Sarma highlighted several patients had alarmingly low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores. Some scores were as low as 3/15. This indicated severe impairment of consciousness. This significantly contributed to higher mortality rate observed this year.​..

164 viral encephalitis cases this year, 61 positive for Chandipura virus: Gujarat Health Minister

As many as 164 cases of viral encephalitis were reported in Gujarat this year, of which 61 cases were found positive for Chandipura virus, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

No case has been reported in Gujarat for the past six days nor has a patient died in the last 12 days, he said, in response to a question in the Gujarat Assembly regarding the status of Chandipura virus and viral encephalitis.

Claiming that all 164 patients were provided prompt and efficient treatment, the Minister said 73 child patients died, of which 28 were infected with the virus.​..
