Mysterious disease hits pork market in Manipur, prices drop drastically

Imphal, October 12 (IANS) Fearing an “unknown” disease following the large scale deaths of pigs in some valley districts, the consumption of pork came down drastically, causing the price of the meat to drop steeply affecting the pork business in Manipur, specially in Imphal.

Officials of the Manipur Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department said that samples were collected from the piggeries at Kakching and Imphal East districts to check if there was any outbreak of disease in the state.

The samples are being sent to a laboratory in Guwahati and if any disease is detected, the department will take the necessary measures to control it, the officials said.

Last year, African Swine Fever (ASF) broke out in three districts of Manipur – Kakching, Bishnupur and Noney -- prompting the government to take steps to deal with the disease.

Culling of all pigs of the infected zone to be done by the officials of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, Manipur by following proper protocols.

Following the outbreak of the African Swine Fever and its confirmation by the Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department vide Notification No. Misc-103/1/2021-Vety-VETY & A.H dated October 16 in the districts of Imphal East, Kakching and Bishnupur, the respective district magistrates have issued restriction orders.

As for Imphal East district, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmad Shah stated that, as per the notification, the epicentre of the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Imphal East District is declared at the pig farm of L Nandalal Singh of Kangba Chingjin, Lamlai, Sawombung Block, Imphal East, Manipur.


Therefore, the following area of Imphal East District is required to be declared as a controlled area for ASF with immediate effect to effectively prevent, control and eradicate the scheduled disease, the notice stated.

African Swine Fever confirmed in more districts of Manipur

Imphal: Manipur Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department has confirmed the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in more districts of Manipur after it was earlier detected in Imphal West district.

Earlier, the department confirmed the outbreak of the highly contagious disease among pigs in Imphal West district. Following the confirmation, the district administration declared a pig farm at the Central Agriculture University (CAU) in the district as the “epicenter” of the disease. A notification from the department issued today has confirmed the outbreak of the disease in pigs in Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur and Ukhrul districts also.
