Seven children have died due to respiratory infection in West Bengal in the last 24 hours, a senior health official said on Thursday.
The government, in a statement, said 12 Adenovirus deaths have been reported in the state so far, and of them, eight had comorbidities.
However, it did not end the deaths in the last 24 hours as due to Adenovirus and instead said that acute respiratory infections (ARI) were common during the ongoing season.
The state health authorities also said "there is no evidence of viral epidemic at present".
The administration said it was prepared to deal with the situation, and has kept ready 5,000 beds in 121 hospitals, along with 600 paediatricians...

Hardly, a day after deaths of seven babies at the Dr B C Roy Institute of Paediatric Science at Beliaghta, on Sunday four more toddlers died of pneumonia-like infections with respiratory distress in two government teaching hospitals since Sunday night raising death toll to 100 unofficially Between January and first week of March.
Three died at the Institute of Paediatric Science while the other at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) respectively.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee who also heads the health department claimed that so far 19 babies have died in the state.
“Adenovirus has claimed life of six babies while the rest 13 had co-morbidities. All the deaths are not caused by adenovirus and there is no need of spreading panic among people,” Mamata said in the state Assembly on Monday.
“The government has taken adequate measures increasing infrastructure facilities like arrangements of 5000 beds in 121 state-run hospitals for treatment of ARIaffected babies,” she said...

Kolkata: West Bengal accounts for 38 per cent of the swab samples that have been tested adenovirus-positive throughout the country, according to a recent survey conducted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED).
NICED sources said that in the survey, which was conducted on the 1,708 samples in the different viral research diagnostic laboratories throughout the country from January 1 to March 9, 650 samples were tested adenovirus-positive.
As per the finding, West Bengal accounts for 38 per cent of the 650 samples that have been tested positive, the highest among all Indian states. Tamil Nadu comes in the distant second position with 19 per cent, Kerala at 13 per cent, Delhi at 11 per cent and Maharashtra at five per cent are in the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Four days ago, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that 19 deaths had been reported, out of which six are confirmed adenovirus cases, while the remaining 12 were cases of co-morbidity.
Contrary to her statement, sources from hospitals said that the death figure was much higher. As per unofficial estimates, the child deaths resulting out of the related symptoms during the last 12 days has touched 48 including three fresh fatal cases during the last 24 hours...

Among the four, the parents of 10-month-old Abir Hossain, from Deganga in North 24-Parganas district, said the baby had tested positive for the adenovirus. Abir, who died around 8.40am on Monday, was admitted to BC Roy hospital a week ago.
Doctors at the hospital said on Monday that while over 30 patients were on ventilator support, a greater number were discharged over the last few days as their condition improved...
