An 85yr old female resident of Shastri Nagar (ward 23) of Jaipur city was confirmed as Zika positive on 21st September 2018. The case presented with fever, joint pain, redness of eye and body ache. She was hospitalized on 11th September with neurological disorder and had a previous history of seizure disorder for last one and half year after cerebrovascular accident. Her blood and urine samples were confirmed as Zika by NIV, Pune & SMS Medical College, Jaipur. On 24th September, 2018, Secretary (Health) deputed a high level team of Senior level Officers ? Advisor, NVBDCP, Director, NCDC and experts from NVBDCP, ICMR NIV Pune (National reference laboratory), AIIMS, New Delhi and NIMR to review Zika situation, surveillance and response plans including preparedness and availability of testing kits and insecticides for taking appropriate public health measures. Subsequently, IDSP in Rajasthan has been undertaking active surveillance on daily basis for suspected cases of Zika Virus Disease in affected area of Jaipur. A total of 6 confirmed cases of Zika are reported till 24th September 2018.

Central Team is investigating the outbreak of Zika virus
disease in Jaipur. A total of 8 confirmed cases of Zika were
reported till 30th September 2018. State surveillance unit,
IDSP, Rajasthan has been undertaking active surveillance
on daily basis for suspected cases of Zika Virus Disease in
affected area of Jaipur.

Publishing epidemic data on open access platforms can help countries tackle outbreaks better
The recent Zika outbreaks in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are a reminder of how poor Indian authorities are at sharing health data. Neither Rajasthan, which saw 154 cases, nor M.P., which saw 127, published the day-wise numbers of confirmed infections. Meanwhile, even though the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has genetically sequenced Zika viruses from five patients in Rajasthan, it hasn?t published these sequences in any open access databases such as GenBank.

Both daily case counts and genetic sequences of the viruses circulating in India can be extremely useful to epidemiologists studying Zika. Daily case counts can show how quickly the virus is spreading. Genetic sequences can help us understand from where the virus came to India and for how long it had been circulating in Rajasthan and M.P. before it was detected. Using data from previous epidemics, scientists have been able to estimate the rate at which the Zika virus mutates. So, by comparing genome sequences from multiple patients, they can estimate when these viruses diverged from their most recent common ancestor, giving an idea of when the virus entered India. If this date is much earlier than the date of the first detected case (September in Rajasthan), that would mean a larger number of patients were infected, which in turn could help customise our outbreak response.

Over 280 cases of zika virus reported from three states: Union minister PTI | New Delhi December 12, 2018 17:03 IST

Over 280 cases of Zika virus infection, including two deaths, were reported from three states in India from September to November, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Total 159 cases of the infection were reported from Jaipur in Rajasthan.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed 159 cases with Bhopal reporting 54, Vidisha 50, Hoshangabad 2, Sehore 21, Sagar 2 and Raisen 1.

One confirmed case of Zika virus was reported from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Zika virus has the potential to spread given the wide geographical distribution of the mosquito vector (aedes mosquito that also spreads dengue and chikungunya) in India, a lack of immunity among population in newly affected areas and the high volume of international travel, the minister said.

"Two laboratory confirmed Zika deaths reported from Madhya Pradesh. In both these cases, death was due to concurrent co-morbid conditions (due to septic shock with dengue encephalitis in one case and multi-organ failure due to septic shock in the other)," Patel said.

[h=3]What is the current situation?[/h] An outbreak of Zika virus has been reported in India. Public health officials in India have reported an unusual increase in the number of confirmed Zika cases in Rajasthan and surrounding states. Zika continues to be a risk throughout India.
Many people infected with Zika virus only have mild symptoms or do not get sick. However, infection during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects. Because there is no vaccine or medicine for Zika, travelers should take steps to prevent getting Zika during travel. They should also take actions to prevent spreading it when they return home.
[h=3]Zika Virus in Pregnancy[/h] A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Zika can spread through mosquito bites and sex. CDC recommends special precautions for the following groups
  • Women who are pregnant:
    • You should not travel to areas with risk of Zika.
    • If you have a partner who lives in or has traveled to India or any other area with risk of Zika, either use condoms or do not have sex for the rest of the pregnancy.
  • Travelers who have a pregnant partner:
    • Use condoms or do not have sex for the rest of the pregnancy.
  • Travelers considering pregnancy:
    • Before you or your partner travel, talk to your health care provider about your plans to become pregnant and the risk of Zika virus infection.
    • Wait before trying to conceive.
      • 3 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms) if you are a man or a couple traveling together
      • 2 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms) if you are a woman and your male partner does not travel
[h=3]What can travelers do to prevent Zika?[/h]
  • Pregnant women should NOT travel to areas with risk of Zika. This is because Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects.
  • All travelers to areas with risk of Zika should (1) prevent mosquito bites and (2) use condoms or not have sex to protect against Zika during travel. They should continue to take these precautions after their trip to stop the spread of Zika to others back home. See below for more information.
[h=3]Special Precautions for Specific Groups[/h] CDC recommends special precautions for (1) pregnant women, (2) the partners of pregnant women, and (3) those considering pregnancy:
1. Pregnant women
  • Pregnant women should NOT travel to areas with risk of Zika because Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects.
  • However, if you must travel:
    • Talk to your doctor or other health care provider before you travel.
    • Strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during travel and for 3 weeks after your return.
    • Strictly follow steps to prevent sexual transmission during your trip.
    • See your doctor after your return, even if you do not have symptoms.
    • Tell your doctor about possible Zika exposure at each prenatal care visit.
  • If your partner travels:
    • Use condoms every time you have sex ? or do not have sex ? for the rest of the pregnancy, even if your partner does not have symptoms or feel sick.

  • If you?re a couple traveling together or a man (traveling without your partner): Wait at least 3 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms, if you develop symptoms) before trying to conceive. During that time, use condoms or do not have sex, to prevent passing Zika to your partner.
  • If you?re a woman (and your male partner does not travel): Wait at least 2 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms, if you develop symptoms) before trying to conceive. During that time, use condoms or do not have sex, to prevent passing Zika to your partner.
Men are advised to wait longer than women because Zika can stay in semen longer than in other body fluids and can be transmitted to partners during that time.

disease in Jaipur. Out of 159 cases tested positive of Zika
virus at SMS Medical College, Jaipur, 64 cases were
pregnant women. Last case of Zika virus disease was tested
and reported positive in State on 29.10.2010. State
surveillance unit, IDSP, Rajasthan has been undertaking
active surveillance on daily basis for suspected cases of Zika
Virus Disease in affected area of Jaipur.
