Encephalitis: Who will protect the adults
Oct 04, 08:26 pm

Gorakhpur: Encephalitis spread to the innocent as well as the adults have started. Up in large numbers, are also victims of the disease. Gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that the idea Encephalitis in Gorakhpur Medical College, approximately twenty to twenty-two per cent of the total number of patients are adults. With waterborne these patients, including Japanese encephalitis.
According to the information so far this year, BRD Medical College enrolled 2083 patients with encephalitis in 1631, while 452 are adults [over] the age of fifteen years. The 1631 children for the treatment of Japanese Encephalitis has been confirmed in 86 of the 452 adults were found in 51 patients with JE.
Talking about the 2010 number this year die of encephalitis in the adult. Encephalitis in 2010 from January to December 3303 all patients admitted to medical school. 2634 of the 669 older children. Check-in total 417 people were victims of Japanese encephalitis, including 217 children, while 132 were older.
Japanese Encephalitis is clear from statistics that more than the number of innocent victims are adults. The same situation but the government did not take to it seriously. Purvanchal In 2005, the epidemic had broken the most havoc. Almost two thousand deaths. That year, more than twenty per cent of adults were suffering from encephalitis.
Given the devastation caused by the epidemic, the government in 2006 along with other forms of prevention Purvanchal had large-scale vaccination. Gorakhpur - Basti System in a fifteen-year 70 million children were vaccinated, but this year the Government to protect them from Japanese Encephalitis in adults did not pay attention.
Japanese Encephalitis in later years, the government's concern over the increasing number of patients grew. At the end of November last vaccination was introduced. In just fifteen years from the time Purvanchal children were vaccinated. Despite the heavy loss of adults over the years, the government ignore the disease, the result is again in front.

Re: India 2011: Encephalitis fatalities, Total 793

What I can gather from the above;

Only 86 of 1,631 (5.3%) under 15s and 51 of 452 (11.3%) adult cases have tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis.

While reports always go on about the vaccination program, they rarely tell us the vaccination status of the current cases.

Comment: The tally of 500 fatalities in UP in 2 months is just not true. It was a rounded figure encompassing the entire nation's encephalitis deaths. CNN-IBN is to be applauded for bringing world attention to the encephalitis issue, but needs to make sure that the government is not given an "out". UP's encephalitis toll is around 420 fatalities with ca. 300 occurring in the past 2 months.

UP: 5 more kids die of encephalitis in 24 hours
CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Five children have died in the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in the last 24 hours of encephalitis, taking the death toll in the state up to 505.

Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court has taken note of the encephalitis outbreak in eastern Uttar Pradesh and pulled up the state government for it.

This came just days after CNN-IBN reported how more than 500 children had died in two months.

Shameful neglect
Oct 12, 2011, 01.06AM IST

In a shocking case of government apathy, 500 children have died of encephalitis in the last two months in UP`s Gorakhpur district. The recent spate of deaths underscores not only the state`s poor healthcare services, but also the Mayawati government`s glaring lack of response to what amounts to a health emergency. Instead of summoning all the resources at its command, the government has remained a passive spectator to children dying in Gorakhpur`s ill-equipped hospitals. So much so that the Allahabad high court has finally had to step in. Pulling up the government the court has now sought a report on the measures taken to control the disease.

Encephalitis kills 8 more kids in Bihar
Patna, Oct 13 (IANS)

Japanese encephalitis (JE) has claimed the lives of eight more children in the last five days in Bihar's Gaya district, taking the death toll in the epidemic to 62, a health official said Thursday.

The two children died in the last 24 hours and six in the last five days at Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital (ANMCH), about 100 km from here, hospital superintendent Sitaram Prasad said.

The first encephalitis-related death in the district this year was reported Aug 23.
Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain resulting either from a viral infection or when the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks brain tissue. The children reported high fever, followed by bouts of unconsciousness and convulsions, the health official said.

State Health Secretary Sanjay Kumar, who visited Gaya early this week, said the children died due to Japanese encephalitis.

Encephalitis hits Uttar Pradesh hard
TNN | Oct 15, 2011, 05.05AM IST

GORAKHPUR: With eastern Uttar Pradesh reeling under the scourge of encephalitis, alarming new facts are emerging. Perhaps the most significant of these is that it's not the virus alone that's killing people. Shortage of ventilators and medical staff, unrest among contractual employees, and infighting among hospital officials, too, are contributing to the death toll.

TOI selected Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur as case study - on its worst days, it has reported one encephalitis death every two hours. According to the college bulletin, the hospital got 2,425 cases since January this year. Of these, 423 patients died during treatment. Until 2pm on Thursday, 67 new cases were admitted this week. 131 children were crammed on 54 beds in the epidemic ward, a shocking approach to treat the communicable disease.
