Since last January have arrived to treat 652 patients, of which 104 have been killed.

Jorhat, July 21: Dispur has decided to set up an exclusive hospital to treat patients of Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome.

It will also start a mass adult vaccination drive in Sivasagar district, which is affected by Japanese encephalitis every year, for everyone above 15 years. According to health department records, 131 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome have been recorded since January, which was 79 till last week. The number of deaths has gone up from 21 to 34, while confirmed Japanese encephalitis cases have gone up to 24 from 15 last week. Death from confirmed Japanese encephalitis has gone up to eight from six last week.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who visited the district today, asked the administration and the health department to prepare a proposal to set up a modern hospital exclusively to treat Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome.

Sivasagar deputy commissioner Jatindra Lahkar said Sarma had announced setting up of a 30-bed hospital in the district only to treat encephalitis patients. It would also have an ICU. He said the minister had asked them to prepare a proposal at the earliest and submit it to Dispur.

Lahkar said first preference would be given to set up the proposed hospital inside the district civil hospital at Joysagar or at the district urban health centre.

He said Sarma had approved the vaccination drive proposal and it would be a pilot project in the state. The drive will be launched from October 15 and will continue till November 30.

Sivasagar chief medical health officer Akhil Hazarika said the survey of adult population would start in the three public health centres soon.

115 die of encephalitis in Assam

Guwahati, Jul 22 (PTI) A total 115 people have died due to encephalitis in Assam since January this year even as the government sounded an alert and advised all health centres in the state to be on vigil. While 86 died due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), 29 others died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE), joint director health (malaria) Abani Kumar Goswami said here today. Twenty districts have been affected by the disease and the total number of people affected by AES was 408, while 157 have tested positive for JE so far, he said. The worst hit was Sibsagar district where 34 people had died due to AES and eight of JE while the total of affected persons are 130. The other affected districts are Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (rural), Barpeta, Morigaon, Kamrup (metro), Darrang, Nalbari, Nagaon, Baksa, Udalguri, Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Karbi Anglong and North Cachar hills, Goswami said.

LUCKNOW: Monsoon heralds the season of death in Poorvanchal. With the deadly combo of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) claiming its 106 victim on last Friday, the scenario threatens to turn ugly once again this year.

BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur is overflowing with patients pouring in from neighbouring districts of Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Sant Kabirnagar, Deoria, Maharajganj, Gonda and from Bihar and neighbouring Nepal as well.

The rice bowl of UP has lost nearly 3,500 lives to the vicious killers over past six years. And though health officials celebrate the 'statistical victory' that JE figures have plummeted to mere 2% from 35.88% as reported in 2005, the sudden spurt in AES cases has them in knots.

Experts explain, "AES is a severe neurological condition with high mortality rate. For the semi-literate or illiterate victims and their families, it is a "plain mystery fever that brings sure death." The virus, which has moved into the killer slot could prove particularly worrisome this year. It has already overtaken JE much before the peak season in August.

"Cases of AES, which has no vaccine have shown a definite climb this year," said Dr SP Ram director general health UP. Talking to TOI, Dr Ram said that 85 AES deaths have been reported in UP till July. The number last year at this time of year was 75. In contrast, the casualty figure of JE reads 21. The official attributes the later phenomenon largely to a sustained vaccination programme. The bigger issue of how the department proposes to tackle the AES, however, leaves him floundering.

Admitting that the particular strain has not been identified, Dr Ram said, "The National Institute of Virology is working on it . It could be an entero-virus, meningitis, malaria or any other water-borne virus," he said, and added that the process could take time.

Then there have been other attempts like visit by an expert team from Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta. The team took 150 samples, but forgot to send the report or the pilot project in Kushinagar undertaken by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for prevention and control of AES, which sources say is largely confined to papers.

"The state health department has launched an awareness campaign to introduce the populace to hygiene and cleanliness practice and written to the chief secretary UP to sanction mark 2 hand pumps for the affected belt to ensure safe drinking water," Dr Ram said. Whether this would ever become a priority agenda with a government busy fire-fighting at this time, remains a mute point though.

"The only lasting solution is to declare JE eradication a national programme like malaria or polio eradication programme," says Dr RN Singh, convener of encephalitis eradication movement in Gorakhpur. Dr Singh is leading a campaign to make JE an election issue this time. "With 125 MLAs out of 403 hailing from Poorvanchal, what is needed is a committed push," he said.

20 districts under grip of encephalitis

GUWAHATI, July 24 ? Even though encephalitis (Japanese Encephalitis - JE in short) has taken a heavy toll and affected 20 out of the 27 districts of the State, the State Health Department has claimed that due to the measures it has taken to prevent spread of the disease, it has remained under control.
Or else, the disease, would have claimed more lives, claimed sources in the Health Department.

However, sources in the National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) of the Central Government contest the above claim of the State Health Department as not true.

Around 35 lakh long lasting insecticidal nets have been distributed by the Department in 2010 and 2011.

Spraying of DDT also continued in the State since February 15 till July and fogging has also been done at places, said the Health Department sources.

In the meantime, children in the age group of 1 to 15 have been vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis infection in the 11 districts of Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Kamrup, Nagaon and Udalguri. Routine immunization of the children who were below 1 year of age during the vaccination campaign in these 11 districts has also been done, sources said.

The vaccination programme is conducted by the Assam Government with the support from the Union Health Ministry?s Immunisation Wing, said the sources.

This time, the State Government has projected five more districts for vaccination during the current year. These districts include ? Morigaon, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta and Goalpara, said the sources.

Since the adults are becoming vulnerable to Japanese Encephalitis infection, the Government of Assam is now considering immunisation programme for the adults on priority basis?according to the number of JE cases found in the districts. It is expected that by September next, vaccination of the adult persons against JE infection could be started.

The Government of Assam has set up eight laboratories to diagnose JE infection at the Assam Medical College, Jorhat Medical College, Gauhati Medical College, Lakhimpur Civil Hospital, Sivasagar Civil Hospital, Golaghat Civil Hospital, Tezpur Mission Hospital and at the Dibrugarh Lahowal-based Regional Medical Research Centre, sources said.

The better facilities for diagnosing JE infection and better treatment facilities for the patients suffering from JE infection have been providing scope for better planning to control the disease and the detection of so many cases is the result of all such facilities, said the sources.

Dimapur, July 25 (MExN): The Directorate of Health & Family Welfare has found two positive cases of Japanese Encephalitis out of five samples collected from Dimapur district. The samples were sent to Dibrugarh Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) for confirmation and the results received on July 22, the department informed today. ?The two patients one from Sitheke Basa village and the other from Walford Colony has been fully recovered and progressing well. So far there is no reported case of mortality due to JE,? the department stated.

GUWAHATI: Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanese Encephalitis are posing a serious threat to the state with the death toll touching 136 on Tuesday. Of the total number of victims, 41 were infected with Japanese Encephalitis.

Fifteen districts have come under its grip of the virus and the worst affected is Sivasagar, which has recorded a total of 184 cases out of which 78 are confirmed Japanese Encephalitis cases according to government records. The toll in Sivasagar has reached 52. Regional director, ministry of health services Partha Jyoti Gogoi said, "The virus causing this disease is transmitted by culex mosquitoes. Areas close to piggeries are also high-risk zones."

SIVASAGAR, August 1: The toll of victims of encephalitis reached 72 after two more died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) at the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh and another died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Guwahati today, officials said. The victims have been identified as Munin Lahon (24) of Gormur at Simaluguri and Ravi Prasad Kalita (19) of Namti. Both of them were students of the Gargaon College in Sivasagar district. The disease has assumed an alarming proportion in Sivasagar district and doctors and public health centres, particularly in rural areas, have been alerted, they said. Altogether 20 districts have been affected, the worst being Sivasagar where 72 including today?s have perished in the past few months, the officials added.

Encephalitis outbreak under control, claims Govt

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 ? Though the death toll in encephalitis in the State has gone up to 159, the situation resulting from the outbreak of this vector-borne disease is under control now. There is no report of any fresh outbreak of the disease in any part of the State. Further, there is no report from any corner of the State of any encephalitis-related death.
This is the statement of Dr A K Goswami, Joint Director, Malaria of the State. Dr Goswami is monitoring the encephalitis outbreak-related situation. He also informed that so far, 636 persons have been affected by Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and of them, 172 persons are confirmed to have been affected by the Japanese Encephalitis (JE).

Of those killed in the outbreak of the disease so far, 52 are confirmed to be Japanese Encephalitis-related death cases, Dr Goswami said.

DIBRUGARH: Encephalitis death toll in Dibrugarh district has touched 24 with three more people dying of the vector-borne disease in the past three days.

Confirming these deaths, the surveillance officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), Kulen Gohain on Thursday said many more people have been found infected with Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and were being treated at various hospitals.

"In Dibrugarh, there has been 24 deaths till now of which 11 have resulted from Japanese Encephalitis and 13 from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome. Another 76 people have been found Acute Encephalitis Syndrome positive and 28 Japanese Encephalitis positive," he said. Balurghat, Aug. 9: Two children from Bansihari have died of viral encephalitis in the past 24 hours and least 10 others have developed symptoms of the killer disease.

Chief medical officer of health of South Dinajpur Asit Kumar Mondal said nine-year-old Anup Roy and Bidhan Mondal, 10, who had been admitted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri with viral encephalitis yesterday afternoon, died this morning.

“The NBMCH authorities have confirmed that they died because of viral encephalitis. Of the 10 children who have been down with fever, two have been admitted to the district hospital in Balurghat,” the CMOH said.

For the past one week, several children had been complaining of high fever, severe headache, nausea and delirium at Shantipur village in Bansihari, the CMOH said.
