The state health department has put 42 people, who had come in contact with the deceased Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) patient Shantaben Rabari, under fever surveillance. The state animal husbandry department has also begun animal surveillance as part of its preventive measures to stop the virus from spreading among humans.

Rabari was a resident of Uandani village in Vadnagar taluka of Mehsana district...

A 35-yr-old woman of Undali village in Mehsana died of Congo fever

Congo fever has reared its head again by claiming the life of a 35-year-old woman of Mehsana district. Though the woman died about a week ago, the cause of her death was confirmed only two days ago.

A resident of Undali village, Shanta Rabari was admitted to a hospital in Idar with complains of high fever, vomiting and bleeding. ?The doctors at the hospital treated her for jaundice but there was no sign of improvement. So the doctors asked me to shift her to some good hospital in Ahmedabad,? said the deceased?s husband Kanji Rabari.

Rabari thereafter admitted Shanta to Sterling hospital in the city. ?The patient was brought on May 20. We suspected it a case of Congo fever, so we sent her medical reports to National Institute of Virology in Pune. But she died the next morning. The reports came today and it confirmed that the patient died of Congo fever,? said Sterling Hospital?s Medical Director Chandramauli Raval. The hospital authority, however, said that the patient was kept in isolation as she was suspected of carrying the virus.

iii. Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever (CCHF)
1 / 1 21.05.11 25.05.11 Under surveillance

A female belonging to village Undani, Vadnagar Block, was admitted to
Sterling Hospital Ahmedabad and expired on 21.05.11. She was confirmed as
a case of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) by RT-PCR test at NIV,
Pune. State Epidemic Team visited the village of the deceased as well as
Sterling Hospital. The containment and preventive measures are being
undertaken by the Health authorities and the Animal Husbandry department.
Serum samples collected from all contacts of the case (Hospital staff and
family members) and samples of Ticks (dead and live Ticks) sent to NIV,
Pune for lab investigation; result awaited. Animal Husbandry Dept collected
cattle sera samples and sent to HSADL Bhopal and NIV, Pune for analysis.
Daily fever survey being undertaken in the area. Health education given
regarding prevention and control measures to be undertaken by the
community.

Cases reported Village Kesimpa, Sipor, SC Kesimpa, PHC Vadnagar, with symptoms offever, diarrhea and hematemesis. District RRT visited and investigated the outbreak. Out of 41 serum samples collected from suspected contacts (Hospital staff and family members) and sent to NIV Pune for CCHF virus isolation, 2 samples found positive. Cases treated and all contacts given prophylactic treatment. Daily fever survey being undertaken in the area.
The containment and preventive measures being undertaken by the Health authorities and the Animal Husbandry department. Deltamethrin spray done in cattle sheds. Health education given regarding prevention and control measures to be undertaken by the community.

Doctor critical with suspected Congo fever

AHMEDABAD: A 29-year old resident doctor of VS Hospital Dr Smiral Parikh is critical with a severe hemorrhagic fever. He is suspected to have the dreaded CCHF Congo fever. Final reports are awaited.

Dr Parikh was admitted in the Sterling Hospital on Wednesday after he complained of high grade fever, severe headache, and metallic taste in mouth and reduced appetite. He had been suffering from high fever with severe headache since the past two days.

However, his condition is reported to be critical as his platelet counts have crashed indicating severe hemorrhagic fever. "The resident doctor is critical as he has also started suffering internal bleeding. We have sent his samples for testing for viruses including CCHF and started an extensive anti-viral therapy to salvage his life," said Dr Atul Patel, senior infectious diseases consultant at Sterling.

Dr Patel said that Dr Parikh apparently contracted the virus while intubating a patient with an unknown hemorrhagic viral fever when a splash of patient's blood landed on his face. Doctors fear that this might be just the exposure that has brought down Dr Parikh with a critical fever.

An official of Sterling Hospital said that Dr Parikh was suspected to have CCFH. ?His blood samples were sent for testing, and the results are still awaited,? said the official.
However, a source in the state health department already feels it is a case of CCHF.

?Following Dr Parikh?s death we have identified the people who had come in contact with him. We are closely monitoring all of them. Their vitals are being measured twice a day,? said the source.

The officer said that Dr Parikh had performed a surgical procedure on a patient, who was likely under intubations and that could have been a potential source of infection.
?However it cannot be said without investigation that the patient was indeed infected from the disease.?

AHMEDABAD: The health department will monitor 77 people who had come in contact with two Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) victims - Mahadev Bharwad of Khochariya village in Bavla taluka and Dr Smiral Parikh who contracted the infection from Bharwad. The animal husbandry department has started disinfecting cattle population in and around Khochariya, primarily because CCHF spreads through Hyalomma ticks which is a common parasite found on livestock in warm, arid and semi-arid conditions.

AHMEDABAD: Dr Smiral Parikh, the 29-year-old resident doctor at VS Hospital who succumbed to Congo fever on Friday, had feared he might be at risk of contracting CCHF virus from Mahadev Bharwad, a patient with unknown haemorrhagic fever. In fact, Dr Smiral had reported about Bharwad's blood splashing on his face and eyes and requested his seniors to take the blood sample and send it for testing for Congo fever at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. His seniors, however, told him to relax and not to worry.

Kochariya infested with Hyalomma ticks

AHMEDABAD: When district health officials visited the house of Mahadev Bharwad - the first victim of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) - in Kochariya village of Bavla taluka, they were astonished to find that his house was infested with Hyalomma ticks. The parasite is the main carrier of Nairovirus that causes CCHF. Not only Bharwad, even his neighbours had severe tick infestation in their homes.

Since dairy business is the principal occupation in the village, these ticks are in abundance here. The CCHF has already claimed the lives of Bharwad and Dr Smiral Parikh - the doctor treating him at VS Hospital.

Ward boy in ICU

The ward boy, who had come in contact with the first CCHF victim and had high fever, is now in intensive care unit (ICU). Though, he is showing some improvement, doctors say that his kidneys are still under stress. "His urine output is less and we hope his condition will improve when his body fights back," said a doctor who has been attending on him.
